Windows 7 Crashes

Hi all, would be very appreciative if anyone could advise me on trouble shooting a problem Im having with Win7 at the moment.

[Spec] Gigabyte 965P DS3, Coolermaster iGreen 600w, E6600, 2gig Corsair ram, Asus 4870 1gb & Creative Audigy 2 zx

Ive reinstalled the OS (Win7 32 bit) and the problem is still occuring. For twelve days everything was fine but im now getting lockups in several games. Which ever sounds is currently playing loops and the display goes black.

Each time the lockup occurs i get the following errors in event viewer -

Critical - Event ID 41 Kernel-Power
Error - Event ID 3 Kernel Event Tracing
Details for the second error - C:\Windows\Panther\setup.etl

Running the latest bios version and ATI/Creative drivers, Ive run memtest for four hours with no errors (will give it a longer run tomorrow). Ive also disabled automatic restart in startup and recovery so I can hopfully get more info next time it crashes. Sometimes goes a few days between crashes.

Be very grateful for any input .

The other error (frequent occurrences) seems to coincide with the above event, not sure if its coincidence but both error and event took place within seconds of each other during the last crash.

Those events aren't causing your lockups, although the "Critical" one is itself a side-effect of the "ungraceful" reboot.

We have a terminology problem. You've used the word "lockups", as well as "crashes". Can you please try to describe what one of these symptoms looks like - do you see a bluescreen? Does the machine reboot by itself or are you forced to use the power button? Pretend you're describing it to your grandmother and be descriptive please

Also, if there's anything in \Windows\Minidump, can you please copy the folder contents elsewhere on your machine first, then zip them up, and upload the zip archive here.

Thanks again, sorry for confusing the issue, will think before i type this time (well maybe a little ).

Ok, the problem is occurring across several games. The display will go black with the last sound that was played repeating. No response from keyboard with the only option being to reset the machine. No blue screen though i have disabled auto restart in the hope of getting a bit more info.

It took twelve days from the OS install for this to happen (same as with the previous 7 install) and it seems fairly random in that sometims the machine will go a few days without it happening.

Thanks for clarifying the kernel power thing, wasnt sure if it was relevent or just a catch all error for an 'ungraceful' reboot.

Just a quick addition, checked the Corsair site for the spec of my ram, the site says 5-5-5-18 at 1.9v. CPUz reports that both 1gig sticks are running at 1.8v, could this cause of the problem? (sorry for the noobish question!)

Sure, even relatively small deviations from prescribed voltages may result in problems. You might want to experiment with bumping that up a notch in the BIOS.

About your memory dump, it's from the 3rd of October. Assuming it's the latest one you found in the Minidump folder, I'd be tempted to guess that it's got nothing to do with your more recent "lockups". It doesn't look like the sort of issue that would produce any type of UI glitch or lockup/freeze either, just a straight BSOD.

I'm having the same problem and am getting the same error reports. It happens quite frequently. A program will become unresponsive, I'll try to close it and it just hangs. Then if I'm lucky ctrl+alt+del will show the menu for some reason NO programs can be started or closed including task manager. I can move the mouse and open the start menu but nothing works. My only option is to manually shutoff the power.

Can anyone help?
