Windows 7 distortion before start up

Every time my windows 7 boots there is somewhat of a heavy distortion in the screen. ie when the screen "Windows is starting" appears there is a distortion.

It started with a 7 update. One particular update took more than 2 hours to install when I shut my machine down. Understandable I was annoyed and removed the battery to force it to power off (its my lap top btw). After that every time I boot I find this distortion.
But from there on windows works normally.

Do a System Restore. The update should have created a restore point at the beginning of the update. Be sure to note any other changes listed in the restore wizard, so that you can deal with them separately. After the restore, run the update again, and hopefully it will work better this time.

I'm guessing that you have an older NVidia graphics card? If so, I've seen this on a few, including one of my own. The problem is the driver and there isn't currently a fix for it other than replacing the card.
