Solved Windows 7 - Download Hang

Hello. The latest version of Ethernet adapter is here. Download latest version and remove previous versioin with Revo Uninstaller and install this. Maybe something is wrong with your driver... :sarc:

Sorry for the lack of response, I have been working on a few big projects. I updated the network card driver and it is still not working. I've pretty much given up hope on this one. Maybe it will work its way out eventually. Thank you everyone for you suggestions. I will still keep an eye on this in case anyone thinks of something.

I work in the IT department of a manufacturing company and I'm having an intermittent issue with downloading files. The computers on my network running Windows 7 Professional 64-bit (With or without SP1) are the only ones with the problem, Windows XP computers work fine.

When I try to download a file, the download starts out fine but then just stops. The download speed gradually goes down, the time remaining gradually goes up, and the amount downloaded stays the same. I have a screenshot of a download that is currently hung up, the time remaining has gone to 4 minutes since the screenshot (20 minutes ago) and the speed has gone to 180 KB/sec. The screenshot is of a download with Firefox but the same thing occurs with Google Chrome, IE8, and IE9.

Also attached is a screenshot of a speed test as well as a screenshot of my "ipconfig /all" output. This doesn't always happen, but it happens plenty enough to impede my work some days. If I restart the download enough times, it will eventually finish but could take up to twenty tries (That's about the highest of gone before just going to an XP machine to download the file). It happens on all Windows 7 machines on the network but never on a Windows XP machine. My router is a SonicWALL NSA 240 and my ISP is Comcast. Comcast has replaced the modem and tested the line with no abnormalities.

Ur attachment shows the firefox download manager.
1)check firefox addons,sometimes addons gives problems,disable addons and try again.
2)Did you tried to download using Internet Explorer?
If not please do.

Yes. I have tried with Internet Explorer and Google Chrome.

I think that I may have found the solution. I think the problem was being caused by the auto tuning feature in Windows 7. I disabled it then downloaded a file without issues, enabled it then a download hung, disabled it then downloaded a file without issues. For now this looks very promising. I will give it a couple of days, then I will post to verify that it was the solution.

Okay. For anyone that may have Googled this issues and found their way to this thread:

My problem from my initial post was solved by disabling the auto tuning feature by opening an elevated command prompt and typing the command "netsh interface tcp set global autotuninglevel=disabled"

You should get an output that simply says "Ok."

Note: I've seen some slowness issues since but I'm not sure if they are related since it's only occasional and most of the time things download at a normal speed. The main thing is that all of my downloads have been successful since.

For more description on the auto tuning feature for Windows Vista and Windows 7; the best page I found was Brink's tutorial on the Vista forum here. Also, I've posted a piece from my original post with the description of the issue.

Auto-tuning Did not Resolve Issue

Hi, ITGuy505,

Thanks for info on auto-tuning and link. However, it didn't resolve my issue.

Setup: Win7, notebook, via wireless router.
Issue: Windows Update download hangs

Resolution attempts: Disabled AVS, Cleaned Windows Update Files (including renaming of Software Distribution Folder), stopped and restarted BITS and WU services, disabled auto-tuning

I was really hoping this was the resolution for me, but it didn't change anything, still hanging on the same spot during download. Thanks for the info though. I am sure that this is definitely the resolution for some of the download issues out there.

Dude, you have made my day. Had to register just to say thanks for your research, and thanks for posting your answer where Google can find it!!

I'm also an IT guy who's started upgrading the office's computers to Win7 Pro. EVERY SINGLE ONE that was running Win7 Professional had the same issue, random download hangs after a bit; youtube video stops downloading at random times; downloads larger than a few hundred KB would invariably hang.

Opened a command line, entered "netsh interface tcp set global autotuninglevel=disabled" - and downloads start working again. Excellent!!



Possibly relevant info: in a Domain environment, with a MS Server 2003 DC, a Dell PowerConnect 3448 managed switch, and a Cisco 800 series router.

Thank you ITGuy505. Your solution worked perfectly for me.

I've searched everywhere for a solution to this problem. I was so tired of all the common irrelevant answers because I knew it was an OS or network issue, not malware. This problem only affected Win7 x64 machines in a Win2008R2 domain environment.

With the end of XP support in April, I knew this had to be resolved or I was going to have several upset users once we upgraded to 7. I'm not even considering Win8. (or 8.1)
