I have on my desktop a dual boot Vista64 and Vista32.
BCD is via Vistabootpro.

I would like to overwrite the Vista32 install with Windows7.

Anything I should be aware of?

I hestitate for example to set the Bios to boot from DVD while installing W7 or will the W7 install when rebooting during installation automatically default to the Vista32 partition?

Many thanks

As long as you select the correct partition during your install it should be fine, but it will change windows 7 to the default OS on the boot selection screen after you have installed it, but I'm sure you know how to change that with msconfig.

Another thing to note is that you will need to assign your Vista partition a drive letter from within Windows 7 to be able to access it, it doesn't matter which letter you give it and it wont change the letter when you boot back into Vista so don't worry about that.

Oh and Welcome to the forums AFWilms.

Do you have another working system partition.?

Also a newer version will always overwrite an older one, and save all your system parts to "Windows Old" folder.

I found it very simple to dual boot 7 with Vista. All I did was install seven to a seperate HDD where I had Ubuntu on another partition, whacked in the disc, changed boot options in BIOS.. when it finished installing my now all time favourite Windows, changed boot options back and changed to my 2nd HDD. When presented with the boot screen, it even kept my old Ubuntu gui boot screen. I suppose the 7BCD detects another boot partition and keeps it, cool feature.. shame Vista never did that, XP dual booting would have made simple. The option for Vista was also there after I selected the BCD from GRUB, which thinking about it, IS the Vista BCD, as when I made the GRUB command I pointed it towards the Vista OS. So the 7 installer must have allowed itself side by side automagically on the Vista BCD as well as keep my Ubutnu Grub.. wow, very easy...

So to answer your question, how are your HDDs and partitions setup? ie 2HDDs, 2partitions, one x64, one x86..? Or 1hdd and both x64 and x86 on one HDD?

Have you thought about adjusting the size of your partitions and going for a triple boot?
It will put you in a strong postition to decide, from then, which ones you really want to get rid of.
Although, if you are happy with the performance of the 64 bit, then there is little reason to hang on to the other?

Windows 7 must be installed to dual boot them.

Before dual booting Windows 7 and Windows Xp,Vista Windows 7 needs to be installed.
