They could be totally trustworthy, I just don't know enough about them to make a judgement. I just prefer to wait before even considering trusting a 3rd party to install security updates on my PC. Does anyone know anything about the company?

Until we know something, I'll use my 3 Win7 machines w/o patches.

With MS updates, that's more of a blessing than a curse these days anyway! :D

Hi,

First time poster here. Highly doubt 0patch will be able to provide any real support other than editing existing binary files on Windows 7 installs to work around major 0 day exploits of interest to corporate clients.

They will certainly not be able to provide regular patches similar to what we currently get for all manner of Low to High severity issues on Win7.

0day wouldn't access to the Windows 7 source code for a start (nobody does), so anything they do will be 'hacking' existing binary files already present on your installation. And unless you have the exact same system baseline/patch level to what they'll be editing, I don't know how this will work.

Good on them for trying though - reading their blog they certainly know windows internals and the black art of binary dissassembly however.

I'm waiting to see what the obviously talented gentleman who gives us the Simplix update pack comes up with after next January.

Wouldn't surprise me if he finds a way to continue providing updates for Windows 7.

I wonder if someone would pay for the extended support and offer updates based on those to everyone. Anyway I don't trust the updates now so no thanks.

I wouldn't be surprised if they "accidentally" show up in a repository somewhere. I don't really know how MS is planning to distribute the ES update files to businesses though. I haven't looked into it. If they're still delivered as MSU files, I'm sure they'll be available somewhere.

And a Partridge in a Pear Tree!
In April this year, Microsoft began proactively notifying Windows 7 Home users about the approaching end of support deadline for Windows 7. Starting this week and rolling out over time, Microsoft will add certain Windows 7 Pro device users to its nag list.

As of this week, users of Windows 7 Pro devices that are not domain-joined will begin receiving notifications about the January 14, 2020 end-of-free-support deadline for Windows 7. Microsoft updated its March 2019 blog post about the next wave of Windows 7 notifications today, October 15, to let Windows 7 Pro users know what's coming.

The original end-of-life notification began appearing April 18. The notification took the form of a patch (KB4493132)

The notification let users know that "After 10 years, support for Windows 7 is nearing an end." It continues:

For me, the cure is worse than the disease. For the most part, I stopped updating Win7 years ago. Maybe a couple of critical updates, and certainly some hardware updates (likely accessible direct from the mfr anyway), but nothing bad has happened.

I use Malwarebytes, Firefox (and Tor if a site might be sketchy). I've updated my box at least a half-dozen times with Win7, including a couple of motherboard swaps. Office 2010 has everything I need for my business and is nag-free.

I've heard the all EOL gnashing of teeth and ululations before. Until an absolutely must-have program appears that won't function with 7, I'm completely unconcerned. Maybe in 2023 but that's an eon in tech-time. Nadella could be gone and subscription models dead by then.

We have reached the Age of Good Enough. Cell phones, cameras, computers, operating systems ... the lion's share is "good enough". Companies that grew fat on the churn of short product cycles are desperately seeking means of maintaining that profit margin. Not. Going. To. Happen.

Giants will fall.

Repent and reboot.

The last one did break my machine, but I repaired the OS, so if I can afford to build a W10 Ent LTSC, then this one will be relegated to being a fancy TV. Only three months left to next year. No more updates, will I install.

Frankly, I don't give the north end of a southbound furry little rodent if ol' Chromedome (aka, Nutella) is gone or not. His replacement may be better or may be worse (my money would be on the latter). Lady Fitzgerald,

I write grants for teens/seniors (mainly) and work at a few different non-profits. I had use of a corporate install for MS Ofc 2010 and used it myself for years, but moved on to SoftMaker. As I am on the road a lot and plopping my seat into somebody else's computer (often), I have resorted to portableapps. A folder with everything I may need works for me on a USB stick, including SoftMaker 2018 as a portable app. I like that method so much, that I use it on my old Dell Latitude laptop at home too. No need for Office, besides which, all of the non-profits have heeded the siren song of Google Drive. Not my preference, but when in Rome. I gave up on evangelizing about SoftMaker or LibreOffice as that advice most often went into the circular file.

The 'nonsense' is unlikely to change soon. Even though MS generates more revenue from the cloud than Windows and Office combined, when almost half your user-base is still using your 10-yr old product, the incentive to monetize them somehow, anyhow, is irresistible.

It's not surprising that MS is gradually gravitating to cloud based computing. Before becoming CEO, Nutella was the head of cloud development.

I needed a good laugh this morning, so I read back through a few of the recent posts on this thread.:D

After several years of running Win-7, it was getting loaded down with crap and performance was suffering. It was taking a minute or more to just go on-line.

No amount of cleaning both the HD and registry would restore performance, so I elected to just replace it.

I'm now running on a brand new install of Win-7/Pro/SP1/x86, and Office is nowhere to be found. I gave up on MS Office after Office 2003. It wasn't even the cost, it was the BLOAT! Office added over 30 megabytes of bloat to the registry.
"Open Office" is FREE, and does not bloat my PC, and it does everything I need from an Office replacement.

So, "Frankly, I don't give the north end of a southbound furry little rodent if....." MS provides support for Office or not. And, I've always run Win-7 with Auto Updates shut OFF, so again, read the blue line above.
(thank you Lady Fitzgerald)

Now that I've had my Laugh for the day, here's wishing y'all a great day. :-)
