Windows 7 Erodes XP and Vista, Is Close to 20% of the OS Market

Windows XP continues to be the dominant platform on the operating system market, but its user base is slipping away at a steady pace.

Windows Vista was never made for greatness, and its share of the OS market has also been shrinking slowly but surely, not that anybody is paying attention, or would shed a tear for the operating system.

Meanwhile Windows 7 is growing into what it appears to be the platform that will end up dethroning Windows XP.

According to statistics from Net Applications, Windows 7’s market share is on the brink of reaching the 20% mark, with the OS at 19.69% at the end of November 2010.

It’s clear that Windows 7 will manage to grow to over 20% of the OS market by the end of the year, especially considering the strong uptake rate of the operating system, which shows no signs of dwindling.

I am always amused by the wording of these types of articles.

"Dethroning"? LOL

Dethroning an OS that is no longer developed or sold (yes, I know, you can sometimes get a new machine with XP, but you know what I mean) and will soon be unsupported.

The hype and hyperbole these days is to the point of being sickening. Anything to get a click, I guess.

XP was released retail over 9 years ago. What a surprise that it's in decline!

Actually it is. There are a LOT of people that don't want to switch over, and most people just use the OS their computer came with. If computers were still sold with XP, it would be GROWING.

Hold your horses for a moment -- of course XP will gradually wither away but there are still LOADS and LOADS of legacy devices and software which will probably mean XP is still running in Virtual Machines in even 20 years time.

I still have some GREAT old hardware devices that will never get a W7 driver but these work fine on an XP virtual machine.

You won't kill off XP that quickly --although it will be more and more relegated to "legacy apps and hardware".

Even a small netbook these days is capable of running a small XP Virtual machine alongside the HOST W7 system.

The days of Native XP and / or dual booting I think we can agree are numbered.

Absolutely right. If nothing else, then XP Mode (which is by the way, a frankly half assed thought out way of guaranteeing XP compatibility) will keep XP in the loop for years to come.

As much as I don't like XP, It's not going anywhere just yet.

Come on people. This is just another one of those 7 v XP. Put it to rest. If you use XP then good for you, and the same goes for 7.

No body really in their right mind cares one way or the other what is happening between 7 and XP. Those who are bent on using XP until the cows come home will continue to do so no matter what anyone has to say whether it is good or bad.

This is becoming like the silly comparison people like to post about how good MS Windows is over Mac OS X, or (again) the other way around.

Rest In Peace XP you were great in your day, but like all things (especially humans) they get old and fade away. . .

XP Mode is not useful . Most of the time can't be right use .

What are you trying to do, games? Virtual machines have suited me great over the past few years. I spend more time fooling around with virtual machines than I do physical hardware.

I kinda disagree with the story. I always liked Vista and would be somewhat sad to see it go, given it was probably the most under-appreciated OS ever made (I don't count ME because it more or less deserved the criticism it got).

Update: Windows 7 has now reached 25% and is predicated to break even or surpass XP by December 2011. . .this will be a great day in computing an old and trying system is about to be put to rest.

People laugh at XP just starting to decline.


My previous job at a small networking company. Our boss was using Win 2000 up until about 2006. Now he refuses to leave XP for Windows 7.

I am really lauging now -- remember how people HATED XP when it first came out and was labelled all sorts of things like Windows eXPensive.

Amazing how people suddenly change their tune.

Actually XP served its purpose excellently --time to move on though on though.
It was built on Windows 2000 which really was "The Innovation" -- I suspect Windows 2000 didn't last too long not because of any technical problems but it was the last OS MS made that didn't require activation and so was easily copied or pirated.

The WORST OS by far was Windows NT (Windows NEANDERTHAL or Windows NO THANKS). This was purely designed to keep IT depts in business because this OS was about as USER UNFRIENDLY or USER AGGRESSIVE as you can get.

The cream of OS development was in the EXCELLENT Windows 2003 SERVER -- Windows 7 incorporates a lot of ideas from that OS with a slicker GUI and designed as a Workstation OS rather than a server OS.

Actually slightly OT but runnung W2K3 server as a workstation OS can be really fast -- you need to make some twiddles and switch off some of the server stuff but it just runs BLINDINGLY FAST on even quite modest hardware.

Still W7 deserves its success --I'm a bit pessimistic about the latest trends in moving stuff to the web ("Cloud" computing) and also a trend of paying for Software by USE rather than a one time purchase and install fee.

I installed Windows7 last week, and I still have my XP because I am going to install it on another drive and PLAY GAMES WINDOWS 7 can't play! So much for the new if it can't handle the old IMO. Useless in fact for an UPGRADE! I upgraded my OS so I can't play the games I used to, but at least I have a new OS, right? lol

I wish Windows 8 would include as little backwards compatibility (aside from the essentials) as possible so that they can optimize the OS for x64 programs.
Long past due to ditch the 16bit essence of Windows.

That's NOT going to happen -- the market wouldn't allow it especially these days.

If you can't get people to stop usng XP what chance have you got of getting people to buy a computer which very little of the old stuff will work on.

You can get away with a little of this sort of stuff with say Blu RAY vs Bog standard DVD's but most people still want to be able to play their old DVD's and CD's whatever the new hardware has to offer.

While its inefficient most people DO want stuff that's compatable with their existing hardware --or at least can run on a Virtual Machine or the like.

For TOTALLY NEW and incompatable hardware there will always be some takers but the market would be very small and the costs VERY HIGH.
