hi guys,

i have been facing with the following error in windows 7 home professional 64 bit.. DELL XPS
"windows failed to start. a recent hardware or software change might be the cause.."

i tried to create a new partition on 1TB harddisk. where 64GB was not allocated..i tried to allocate it and it pushed an error as "this operation cannot be performed."

then i installed partition magic 8.0, after finishing it asked for restart and then the problem started...

i tried launching startup repair..but, even it failed to solve the problem.

i tried system restore as well, even that doesn't work...

can someone please help me...as i have so much of my important files on my desktop...

Thank you very much in advance.........

Before you mess it completely up, I suggest you recover your files first. This is one way to do it.

Why did you mess with it when the system gave you this message without investigating the cause.

"this operation cannot be performed."

Partition Magic was certainly one of the worst alternatives you could have chosen.

If your data is backed up and you have tried everything on the troubleshooter,
then looks like a :ar: Clean Reinstall is the way.

cheers

Let's have a look how things on your disk look. Use the bootable CD of Partition Wizard (last box on the webpage). Download this .iso and burn it to CD. Then boot the PC with that CD. Take a readable picture of the PW result and post it here.

Hi anveshreddy,

I understand issue would be caused partition magic which caused this issue on the system. You should definitely go with the suggestion in this thread as you have backed up the data clean re-install should fix the issue.

However, if the issue persists then you should check your hard-drive by following the diagnostics below:

Keep us posted with the results so we can advise you further.
