I must be missing something but I can't find any place to set up a 1010-xxx access number when sending a fax with the Microsoft fax utility.

Can anyone point me to the procedure...I have read help and been through the setup options but no joy.

Did MS decide this was not needed?

Do I need to get a third party program to fax from my computer?

Thanks for the response and the link...but I must not be making myself clear.

I don't want to fax over my dsl connection. I want to fax using my old fax modem.

I have been doing this successfully on my old XP computer for several years. I recently replaced the computer with a Windows7 64bit system. I installed the fax modem from the old box and Windows 7 recognizes it.

All I really want to know is how I set up dialing sequences in the Windows 7 fax utility using a 1010-xxx prefix.

Or if it can even be done. Which means,if not, it is another useless add-on with limited functionality and I will have download and/or purchase a third party.

Unfortuately, I can't be of much help, because I have a cable connection, even for my telephone, thus I can't use the FAX, except via an online FAX service. You will need to wait until someone with a connection like your's responds.

I think what the OP wants to do has nothing to do with the Internet connection at all, he just wants to use the fax function of his dial-up modem (which should be connected to the regular phone line) together with the Microsoft Fax service built into Windows. It seems to me that while the interface looks new, the basic rules are same as in XP.

As far as I can see this is what you do: you create your fax whichever way you want, say you print a document containing your text to fax. Then a "new fax" window pops up. In Windows 7 this looks like an email client, you are supposed to choose the recipient from the Contacts list. What you are interested in is the button "Dialing Rule" on the right of the "To:" field. There you can choose "create a new rule" and a window will pop up which will ask you to set up your area code. There you can also set up a "carrier code" and a "access number" for the outside line (useful e.g. in an office). I think between these two you should be all set (depending on whether you are expecting to hear a dial tone after you use your special number, I've actually never used a 1010 access number myself, so I don't know how they work).

Hope that helps.

unifex,

Yes that helps. Spot on, thank you. I saw Dialing Rule button but I am so used to Winfax (a carry-over from an old Win98 installation) that it didn't register. thanks for setting me straight.
