Windows 7 & Fedora 12

Hi, I'm new at the forum and I hope you can help me.

The thing is that las wednesday I bougth a brand new Gateway NV7915U at BestBuy, which came with a Windows 7 home premium installed. I have been working on Fedora for more than a year and a half.

Since I wanted to give win7 a try I made a partition exclusively for fedora and proceed with the instalation.

I let the wizard find a free space and continue... The wizard found there was another OS and ask me where I wanted it to place GRUB loader... I choose the MBR... the instalation finished as it should and i run fedora for a first time...

When I came back to check if everything was ok on windows I found out that it wouldn't run and a Gateway Startup Support window shows up. It recovers the system and tells me that everything is ok and i should reboot. The thing is that I have done this like 4 times allready since yesterday.

Other problem is that at BestBuy they never give me the instalation disk, they only gave me the recovery disks, which I used allready and got the same result.

I think the problem is at the MBR... any solution?

Unfortunately, it's quite common for vendors like Gateway to not provide OS installation discs.

In retrospect, I would have imaged the system myself with a tool like Acronis or Macrium Reflect (free), which would have captured your MBR as well as your C drive.

Do you have another machine running 7 that you can use to create a system repair disc?

You can use a utility called EasyBCD to set up a Linux boot using the Win 7 boot loader.

Register in their forums and down EasyBCD version 2.0 beta an it will set it up for you. If you have problems, go the their site or come back here.

well thanks for the tips, I should not get too excited about an installation next time and make the proper backup... I didnt know I would corrupt the MBR...

Well good news is that I manage to get a new copy of windows 7 but different version... It would be a clean install by that path...

But I still want to get the original system to work... I will get a repair disc tomorrow and I hope it will work...

About the easybcd... I'm not sure how it will help me... should I run it with wine on linux? should I run it in another working win 7? the ehing is that I cannot run anything on my win 7...

You have to use either the GRUB loader that Linux put on or the Win 7 boot loader. If you use the Win 7 one, EasyBCD will set up the Linux boot for you.

Many folks go ahead and use the Grub loader, where you need to add the lines that include the chainloader +1 entry. It is up to you which one you want.

If you want the Win 7 boot loader, there is a tutorial here about how to remove GRUB, which includes something about running the bootsect /nt60 all command. If you want to run GRUB, check the linux forums.

Hi! problem solved, I used the installation DVD, which i managed to find, and did everything on the link Saltgrass post (Thanks a lot).
