Is there a file explorer extension for Windows 7 that imitates the cool Windows XP common tasks sidebar? FolderXP didn't work in Windows 7.
And also the "slide view", simple photo viewer mounted in the pictures folders for Windows 7?

Hi Alan-

I'm not aware of the common tasks sidebar in Windows Explorer.

However, when you open Windows Explorer, click on Organize, Layout. You should be able to select the Preview Pane which will show each picture when you select it. Is that what you're looking for?

Sadly there is not. it screws up the OS if you do something like that.

Common tasks sidebar is the vertical pane on the left side of the explorer window(like File and Folder Tasks, Other Places, ...). I don't really like the toolbar on top of the window, so I want this on Windows 7(or Vista). There is a utility called FolderXP but it is for Windows 98 and when I installed to Win7, nothing happened.

I think you're out of luck on getting that side pane.

You can make your own folder of common tasks on the C drive, filled with shortcuts to exe files and data folders. It doesn't interfere with system functions. I've called this AAACommon Tasks, so it will sit at the top of the hierarchy. You can also put a shortcut to that same folder into the Start Menu.

I knew that, but I didn't do that because the items are static, and I can only add locations(folders), and it does not really look like the XP's one. I used QTTabBar's vertical toolbar too. I almost made it look like XP's one, but the items were also static, and no folding, and I couldn't add the details pane(I don't really need the details pane though). One day I tried to use XP's shellstyle.dll because it has the task pane information but it broke the folder window

=> Similar, but the Preview pane shows up on all folders(XP only shows in pictures folder)

I am familiar with the XP sidebar but never liked it. It seemed that it took up much space for little benefit. As Windows 7 doesn't have it I suspect it wasn't very popular.

Windows 7 supports shell extensions but they have limited scope. Due to security and other concerns some things that worked in older systems are no longer supported. If a developer really wanted to he could create something like what you want using unsupported techniques. Microsoft discourages this and good developers tend to avoid such things. Such solutions tend to be very fragile and likely to break with even a minor update to the OS. And something that worked in Windows 7 very likely would not in Windows 8 or Windows 10.
