Windows 7 File/Folder permissions

I am loggin into Windows 7 Home Premium 64, with an account with administrator permissions. Some files/folders are unaccesable. For example some system folders (inside of the d:\users) folder cannot be opened. Also, some files can be viewed, but not saved/changed.

1. How can I bypass this restriction?
2. Why can't I have access to all files/folders if my account has administrator permissions?

I am trying to edit a filed, installed by the Blackberry Desktop Manager 5.0.1. The file is named ip_modem_configuration.xml. I can open the file, but cannot save the changes. In my work computer, I can edit this file, under Windows XP Professional SP3. This file allows to enable the use of the Blackberry as a modem (Tethering). Thanks for your help.

Right click file, properties, security, advanced, then change permissions to take ownership of file then you should be able to do as you please with it

Also i believe that it you change permission of a folder this will apply to all sub folders

If you check the ACL of the file folder, you'll be able to see who has what permissions.
Those permissions on folders only go to children if you specify btw.

You better be careful what files you attempt to change permissions on. Those that are in the C:\Users directory that deny you access are not actually folders or locations you need to enter. They are junctions only there to serve as compatibility for older crapware.

Changing permissions on these junctions will cause serious problems, like infinite loops which is never good.

I can confirm this, i took permissions of folders/junctions i shouldn't have done and ended up with an infinite loop of ownership changes to Application Data, it completely ruined my permissions and a reinstall was the only (quick) resolution.

Crap, looks like I need to do this too. I used "easy transfer" from a hard disk (moving stuff from XP to W7), and I had locks on everything in Docs and Settings (and on D&S). I did the security thing and always gave me an error trying to change permissions. Only way to get in was in the Users folder, tried changing permissions there, gave me error after error.

What's the secret to doing it right? I have 2 sets of Default users, a "public" set of something, some look like shortcuts... Is there a way of making it right without starting over?

No, unfortunately not. Never mess with permissions if you don't know what you're doing. They are set the way they are for a reason.
