Windows 7 Freeze and Possible Time Server Problems

In Date and Time, Internet Time tab, click on the Change settings button. In the window that opens up, make sure the Synchronize with an internet time server block is checked. Now change the server to time.nist.gov and see if it works.

Go back into Services and double click on Windows time. Select the Logon tab in Properties. Make sure your logon is configured properly.

I find these outdated drivers on your system. Update these drivers starting with the Realtek driver.

cool, that all seemed to go ok.

if i click on the button to sync the time with the internet time server it works. i have previously been using the windows one and it worked ok with that but also only when i manually started it by syncing.

the logon details for the service show its trying to use Local Service and it seems to have a password but i haven't set this.

i upgraded all the drivers and am just waiting for a blu-ray encode to finish so i can restart and run the tool again as well as check if the time service has started properly.

You are welcome for the help. I am glad your time is working. Windows sets that local service logon and password automatically. I never set mine either.

hi carl, i'm still having the problem with the freezing, it froze once last night and again this afternoon both times while trying to encode a blu-ray. this seems to point to heat being the problem, but i don't think so. the same setup has previously ran for days encoding at 100% and I thought this resulted in shut down, not freeze?

nothing has actually changed with the time service, it was always set to manually start and still fails to. it'll sync and start if i tell it to but i don't think this is correct

renaming CLBSTOR.sys seems to have stopped my blu-ray player from being detected by windows. asking windows to update the driver tells me i have the correct version

I rarely see my time service running. It starts according to the preset schedule, syncs and turns off. Mine is not on all the time.

If renaming CLBSTOR.sys has stopped your Blue-Ray player from working, then you player is obsolete. CLBSTOR is not a Win 7 driver; in fact it is an XP driver. CyberLink is obsolete. carl, but mine is specifically telling me that it is not running and that it will not sync. this is totally different from the message you are getting. nothing has changed in this regard.

I'm going to sound ungrateful again, for which i apologise, but: Since I came to this forum you have asked me to remove two useful pieces of software but nothing has improved with my system. in fact its less stable now than it was before. it crashed again this morning, a full on losing ten years off the system clock freeze again. thats 3 crashes in 24 hours, more than i was seeing in a week before. is there anything useful you can help me with to stop this other than referring to a list of outdated hardware and software?

When no specific causes are given in a dump, one must troubleshoot. Troubleshooting is a process of elimination. It is a known fact that obsolete drivers can and do cause conflicts and BSOD's. Regardless of how useful software and hardware is, if they are not Win 7 compatible, they are potential trouble. Do I know those drivers were/are causing trouble? No I don't. I know something is. In troubleshooting, you have to start somewhere and I start with drivers is no specific cause is given.

Regarding your clock, what options do you have for the clock in your BIOS? Is the time set correctly in the BIOS? I will ask one of the hardware gurus to look at this thread regarding your clock. I do know that improper time can create problems. Do you have the time zone set correctly in Win 7 time?

You can do some hardware testing. Test your RAM with Memtest86 following the instructions in this tutorial: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/105647-ram-test-memtest86.html. Run Memtest from a cold boot after your computer has been off for an hour or two. Let it run for a minimum of seven passes; this will take 6-8 hours. Post back with your results.

In the meantime, I will get help with your clock issue. I do not think you are being ungrateful at all. I think you are frustrated and I would be, too. It is difficult to diagnose from a distance when I am not in front of your computer and seeing exactly what it is or is not doing.

Also, please upload your latest mini dumps. After you have made changes, the dumps may tell us something different.

ok, i'm at work now but I can spend some time on this tonight when i get home. First things first, what are the minidumps that everyone keeps asking for? i thought i had correctly followed the instructions on the BSOD posting page? 1 run the tool, 2 run the perfmon report.

First, before I forget, I was right on checking the time in your BIOS and resetting the time there. Also, and I did not think of this, consider replacing your CMOS battery. A bad battery can definitley cause the time to be off. Take care of your time issue and then move on to the other things.

You did the BSOD posting just right. Every time you get a BOSD (or nearly every time), a mini dump is created. After you have made changes to your system such as updating or eliminating drivers a newer mini dump may reveal something different. Follow the instructions in this tutorial to upload just the mini dumps: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/83172-dump-files-upload-seven-forums.html. Your dump files are stored in C:\Windows\Minidump. You can upload just the most recent four or five dumps.

hmm, reading some of the symptons of a problematic CMOS battery does point in this direction. Well, I will pick one up on the way home and try the rest of your recommendations. is a little strange as the motherboard is only 18 months old, but maybe it was a bad battery

I'm still a bit stuck on CLBSTOR though. I understand that it may be an XP driver but I am sure I have had the blu-ray player running before installing the Cyberlink package (but maybe not reading blu-ray disks) so i think it originally had a signed driver. I'm questioning whether this is possible though as from my knowledge blu-ray players are not supported at all by Microsoft? i certainly don't see any blu-ray players on the list of compatible devices that you linked to.

I hope a simple battery change will solve the problem. I had forgotten that I went through this with Win 98 many years ago.

I don't think it is Microsoft that does not support Blue Ray; rather it is the Blue Ray that does not/has not yet upgraded for Win 7 if indeed there are no compatible devices listed. However, I find that both version 6 and version 7 of Cyberlink are certified Win 7 compatible. And Roxio is listed as compatible; but not certified.

i'm no expert on the microsoft / blu-ray situation but i see it brought up a lot on another forum i am a regular contributor to Fact or Fiction: Microsoft and Blu-ray - Chris Lanier's Blog

plus the compatible products you list are both software, there is no compatible blu-ray hardware listed. I too have seen blu-ray playing within windows 7 (on my own system) but i don't believe its officially supported.

For the freezing issues try DISABLING the task in the screen shot. I have a media system that was freezing randomly or so I thought it would freeze some random time after this task ran. Once I disabled it my media system has not locked up.

ok an update:

• i have switched the winsat task off. it didn't sound important
• time zone is correct as UTC
• the reason i wasn't able to find any dumps previously is because it wasn't set up to capture them! it is now and any in future will be uploaded
• it seems my blu-ray player is supported in win 7, its this one Windows 7 Compatibility for LG ELECTRONICS GGCH20L 4X DVD Burner: LG ELECTRONICS. Drivers, Updates, Downloads it says it should run without any additional software but if I rename CLBSTOR it doesn't load. does the driver need unregistering in some way?
• later tonight i'll swap the CMOS battery and check the bios settings and then leave it off so i can run the ram tests in the morning. motherboard is only 18months old though so i'm not sure its this. still its a cheap thing to try!

Maybe your player uses CyberLink drivers. Maybe that driver will work without conflicting. Keep us updated.

right i think i have the CLBSTOR problem understood. The player is compatible with windows 7 without any additional drivers, but only as a DVD player. To get blu-ray support i need Cyberlink PowerDVD or equivalent. My version of PowerDVD is not compatible with Windows 7, hence the driver issue.

So i'll buy the new version of PowerDVD in a few weeks, for now i've renamed the driver so it'll be out of action.

next, CMOS battery

Thanks for the update and that makes perfect sense. Be sure to let us know if the CMOS battery solves the time problem. Don't forget to set the time correctly in the BIOS after you replace the battery.

right, an update:

• good news - memetest ran for 9 complete passes (8Gb taking 17 hours) and zer errors
• bad news - changing the CMOS battery hasn't changed the problem with Windows Time Service not running. I still get the same error message when i am in the internet time tab of time and date, yet it still starts when i tell it to sync.

any further suggestions? thanks

sounds like a bad mobo to me... If the CMOS battery change didn't fix the issue, sounds like a bad board?
