Windows 7 freezing

Hi,

I am running Windows 7 64 bit and my system keeps freezing. When it starts up it takes a while for the mouse and keyboard to stop working on the log in screen. Then when the desktop loads the mouse won't respond for a while and will then jump around. I have tried multiple mice and know that is not the problem. Also, I have a CPU monitor which keeps jumping between cores having one always at 100% even though nothing except the OS is running. I booted up in safe mode which worked for a while. I corrected an error with my graphics card drivers but that didn't solve anything. Even with the graphics card drivers uninstalled the problem persists. All I can think of is a possible problem with my motherboard chipset. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks

Another thing I should note: Windows is completely unusable when it loads so changing anything within it really isn't an option. Also reinstalling windows is an option for me.

knightoftherose,
Since your system is completely unstable. I strongly recommend a full and complete clean install. After that do NOT install any drivers that are not from Microsoft.

After doing the above, is your system stable?

Also more info about your actual hardware could be of use.

To make a hard disk appear "virgin" when installing Windows 7:
Insert and boot from the Win7 DVD.
When the very first dialog appears asking you to hit Next of do anything, then:
use the Shift + F10 combo. This will get you to a command prompt.
At this point you are going to use a command called DiskPart.

  1. type DiskPart and hit Enter,
  2. type LIst Disk and hit Enter,
  3. looking at that list you should see one of them whose size corresponds to the disk where you want to install Win 7
  4. type Select Disk 0 (or whatever number is correct for your system)
  5. type CLEAN and hit Enter
  6. when clean is finished, type EXIT and hit Enter
  7. type EXIT and hit Enter to return to the install program.
Let us know how things go.

I did what you suggested and started a clean install. I'll let you know if it's stable after it finishes. As for my system specs:

Gigabyte motherboard LGA 775 socket model number: EP45-UD3P
Intel core 2 quad @ 2.83 GHz
2 320 Gb Seagate Barracuda drives in RAID 0
1 1Tb Seagate Barracuda non-RAID
XFX ATI Radeon HD 4890
8 Gb Mushkin DDR2-800

I just finished the install. I did not install motherboard chipset or the graphics card driver. With just the bare OS it seems completely stable.

What should I do now?

knightoftherose,
Congratulations! You now have a solid working system.

Next? you ask. Next is to do a system image backup of your computer. If you have an external drive to use for backup then that is excellent. In any case, the procedure is:

  1. WIN key (that's the one with the funny wavy flag on it)
  2. Control Panel
  3. Backup & Restore
  4. Create a system image (in the left-hand task pane)
Next create a system Repair Disk:

  1. WIN key
  2. Control Panel
  3. Backup & Restore
  4. Create a system repair disk (in the left-hand pane)
Ok now you will be prepared for any possible disaster.

Update your system:
WIN
Control Panel
Windows Update
In the left-hand pane, "Change Settings"
Put a check mark in ALL of the boxes.
At the bottom of that screen is an OK button.
Click on the OK button.

Click on "Check for Updates"

Let MS update.
Restart your system (even if you are not asked to reset by MS)

Go to Windows Update again.
Even if Windows Update says you don't need to update,
click on "Check for Update"
Install any additional updates,
Restart your computer
Keep doing this until you finally come up empty.

When you update, be sure to install the "Optional" updates and any driver updates that Microsoft lists.

Do NOT install any other drivers at this time.

Install a couple of your favorite apps, run and if all is ok, then add a couple more, etc.
If you ever end up with a problem then UNINSTALL (via Control Panel | Programs and Features) the offender.

Thank you.

I installed the windows updates which included an updated driver for my graphics card. So I don't need to worry about that. the 800X600 resolution was getting old :P So far everything seems to be stable. Sound and everything works. Wireless internet. The graphics card. I got the same score in Windows that I got before(5.9 due to slow hard drives). I haven't installed much yet. No games which I definitely want to do(since that's a big reason why I built the machine). Thank you for all your help. I really appreciate it :)
