hello all,

i m using a dell inspiron m101z notebook which has windows 7 home basic prebuilt. now i got a very new win7 home premium dvd. and since yes i m not very good in all this computer stuff i have opened my own topic so that things bcom clearer to me.

i want to install home premium so how can i do it if i dont want to lose my files on the laptop. specially some dell softwares like webcam and all.

i went thru this tutorial. does this do the needful. it is ok i dont need to format my HD. but do i need to backup? also the notebook i use has only C drive n no other drive.

As Basic>Home Premium is an acceptable Anytime Upgrade path, the Home Premium key should work when installed in Anytime Upgrade. Try again.

If not, you can use the popular workaround to trick the Home Premium DVD into thinking it's doing an always-allowed same-version Repair Install.

First set a System Restore Point - Create, then run Regedit to change the keys shown below to HOMEPREMIUM for the EditionID, and Windows 7 HOMEPREMIUM for the ProductName:

regkeys.PNG

If you have SP1 installed and your Home Premium installer is not SP1 you may have to uninstall SP1 first: uninstall Windows 7 Service Pack 1 (SP1). Try it first to see.
