Hi,

As my old CPU and motherboard failed, I had to get a new board and processor. They were not the same because the old CPU and board were discontinued. MS however said that my key was good and I could activate it on the new board/CPU.

Windows activated fine, says its genuine, passed the Genuine Advantage test miraculously, but the question is, if I now go to download/install updates, will it become un genuine or will it become un genuine even if I don't install updates?

I don't see why it should, because in the EULA it says that MS will make an exception if your motherboard fails
as long as its only one PC, which it is. The hard drive which windows 7 was on from the old motherboard is still in my PC, as is all the other old hardware apart from the board and CPU.

Any help would be highly appreciated.

Cheers,

If its activated, there shouldn't be any problem.

I have a system that the motherboard died and I had to get a different one. I had to call Microsoft to activate the Win 7 OEM, but updates didn't affect it. That system was dual boot Win 7/Win 8.1 (on separate hard drives) and I didn't have to do anything with Win 8.1, it activated automatically. I've since upgraded the 8.1 to Win 10 and no problems.

How did Microsoft inform you that the OEM key was okay to use?

My understanding is; if Microsoft stated that it was okay to use the old COA key with the new motherboard and your system activated properly you should not have a activation problem.

Well Jack and Jack posted at the same time.

I was informed by Microsoft via their live chat. I contacted them to ask them if it was okay to reuse the key. They took the key off me, and confirmed it was okay to use and if I had any trouble activating to call them.

Great! So should have no problems? I was dreading for weeks it might no activate and I'd have to buy a new key, and was so surprised to see that it didn't even require a call to MS!

I've been told by Tom's Hardware it probably activated straight away because unlike newer boards, my board has no SLIC feature built into it.
