Solved Windows 7 has updated and installed the last 15 times I have shutdown

Hi,

First post

Every time I shut down my computer it updates and installs 2 updates. This takes about 20 minutes.

It surely is not the case that Microsoft has updated Windows 7 everyday for the last few weeks.

Is there anyone having the same issue, or can help me at all.

Welcome to Windows Seven Forums...

Looks like your windows is configured to Install updates automatically. You have to change the settings.

Right click on Computer icon on desktop or on Computer inside Start button, and select Properties. On the opened window look for "Windows Update" link on bottom right side and click on it.

Windows Update screen will open. Here click on "Change settings". Now click on the drop down box below important updates. Select "Check for updates but let me choose whether to download and install them"

This option will inform you whenever any updates are available at Microsoft update site but will download them only when you tell the system to download and install.

This way you can do the download and install updates in bulk and finish updating the system with fewer restarts.

Please tell us which two updates it is installing - go to the Update History to find out.

The install is obviously failing at some point - we need to know the error messages from teh update history as well.

Hi guys,

Thanks so far. It has installed;

1. Security Update for Microsoft .NET Framework 4 on XP, Server 2003, Vista, Windows 7, Server 2008, Server 2008 R2 for x64 (KB2656351)

2. Update for Microsoft .NET Framework 4 on XP, Server 2003, Vista, Windows 7, Server 2008, Server 2008 R2 for x64 (KB2600217)

Seems to have installed these everyday since 11 May.

Unfortunately, .NET problems are fairly common, and can be almost impossible to solve.
What happens if you force a Check for Updates in Windows Update? - do these two still show?

When installing those updates, do you wait for the install to finish?

I ask because some of those .NET updates can take an eternity and a day.

You may think your computer is hung.

When you get ready to shutdown, FIRST: CTRL + SHIFT + ESC keycombo | Applications tab |
If that shows that Windows Update is running, then do NOt shutdown. Wait and wait and wait for the update to finish.

Again, specifying the error code from the failed installation of those update will help us in offering you a more specific solution.

My system also fails to update the following updates.

1. Security Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB2676562) (15kB)
2. Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB2679255) (15kB)

The system downloads these updates and gives a message that "The updates were successfully installed".
Succeeded: 2 updates.

There is no error message.

Then again after sometime I am getting the message that 2 updates are available and when I check them, they are the same above updates.

I again tried to install these 2 updates. And the same above cycle continues like a neverending story. Even a system restart is not helping.

So I have hidden both of them and tried to forget them.

The fact that those two updates failed to install properly is worrying - it could imply that you have malware present.
Please download and install Malwarebytes Anti-malware www.malwarebytes.org and update it, and run a full scan (DO NOT enable the Real-Time protection option!) in your main account, and Quick scans in any other user accounts.
Delete everything it finds
Post back with a summary of the results.

Then download and run the CheckSUR tool - Description of the System Update Readiness Tool for Windows Vista, for Windows Server 2008, for Windows 7, and for Windows Server 2008 R2 - and post the results and upload the CheckSUR.log file.

The updates have never failed, and when I look at the update list they all say 'successful' next to them.

I guess I could run malware check, but from the general advice, it seems I should just start living with the constant updates!

Not at all!
The fact that the updates are re-installing means that WU is not detecting the fact that they are already installed - which in turn means that they didn't install properly.
The question then becomes whether it's the detction mechanism which has the problem, or the install mechanism.

DO check for malware. It sounds as if you think that is an option - it's not, and should be done regularly.

Okay, don't think I'm the right guy to troubleshoot a detection mechanism...

We have a tech company on a retainer at work, should they be able to help with this?

Gary, I too am having the same issue as you. The updates are showing in the update history as successfully installing each time. I've also tried installing them myself by running windows update manually. The updates are KB26233171, KB2676562 and KB2679255. Same three over and over and over, always successfully installed. Extremely annoying as it causes shutdown to last for a long time.

That's right, same as me!

I am preparing for a meeting over the next couple of days, but after that I am going to get our tech guys to have a look at the issue. They access the computer remotely, so I'll look and see what they are doing.

Maybe do another forum post in a week or so to jog my memory, and I'll let you know how I get on
