Hi guys,

I am planning to build a Download rig using some old parts.

Config:

Processor: Intel Celeron 1.1Ghz Socket 370 SL5ZE
Motherboard: 810E unbranded mobo
Memory: 2x256MB SD RAM
Graphics Card: nVidia FX5200 128MB PCI
HDD: 40GB HDD or CF to IDE SSD & 500GB for Storage
OS: Windows 7 Home Basic x86

My queries are:

How much memory does Windows 7 Home Basic use & how much will I have free for other apps?

I have also tried Windows Thin PC on my Netbook.
When will ThinPC be released?

Thanks & regards,
Hariharan

If you are building a box to simply download things from the web, why would you pay for a copy of Windows 7 for the box which would struggle a bit with the low specs? Instead, I'd install some type of Linux distro on the box and download with that.

Ah! good question.

First of all.
I have Won a license of Windows 7 Home Basic on a Giveaway 9~10 months ago.

Since it was lying idle, I thought of using it for my download system.:) Well before activating Windows 7 Home Basic I will use it as trial.

Second thing is that all my systems at my home are currently running Windows Vista Home Premium or Business excluding my netbook which is running Windows Thin PC.

Ok, if you already own it and aren't using it elsewhere, might as well use it.... The only advantage to using something else would be to learn about another OS...but that may not be of interest to you.

I have used Ubuntu 10.04 on my Desktop. & also used MeeGo on my Netbook.

As far as Speeds are concerned I found both of them to be excellent in every aspect.

I was interested in getting Windows 7 running on an old system.

As I said before if it is sluggish then I won't be activating that OS & at that point I will use Ubuntu or any lighter Distro which suits the system.
