My old HDD crashed and I have installed a new 250gb SSD on my Asus laptop and it is recognized but my Factory Windows 7 installation won't boot because it does not seem to have auto boot. Is there some way to boot using dos command or other method ? I have the bios set to boot from dvd. The Window 7 disk will not auto boot on any of my desktops unless I open the disk and select install. Any advice would be appreciated.

"The Window 7 disk will not auto boot on any of my desktops unless I open the disk and select install." What happens when you try to boot from the DVD?

Have you attempted to choose the boot device from a boot menu, rather than by using a BIOS setting?

The boot menu is typically accessed by holding a particular F key down during the boot process. Maybe F2 or F8--I'm not sure on an Asus.

How sure are you that you have chosen the right boot device in the BIOS?

Has this specific "Factory Windows 7 installation" disc EVER booted ANY computer?

You could always download a legal Windows 7 ISO and burn it to a DVD and see if that will boot. You'd activate it with a Product Key that should be found on a sticker somewhere on the machine--possibly in the battery compartment.

Or put the ISO on a bootable USB flash drive.

The dvd device scans the disk as you can hear it but won't open it. It was used on another computer but how would the hard drive detect that. I do have the original disks for this laptop but the recovery disk and program disk also won't auto run. I have not tried these disks on any other computer.
Thanks for the help

I have the product keys for all my computers and I will try a iso download and let you know how it works
Just wondering if I'm the only one who thinks that an installation disk should auto run to the disk menu?

Yes, if you have the dvd drive set to 1st boot, you should always see the words "Press any key to boot from dvd"

Downloading a fresh SP1 iso and creating a new install dvd is the best thing you can do, make sure you burn it at no faster then x4 speed.

Free ISO Burner

Or if you have a 4GB usb stick use rufus to put the iso file on the stick, then use the one time boot menu to choose the usb stick once, do not change anything in the bios.

Rufus - Create bootable USB drives the easy way

On Asus MB there is a F key (F12 ?) that you press after the POST beep to launch a boot menu. then choose the CD / DVD.
Maybe your CD / DVD isn't working properly.
Download a iso from M$ Microsoft Windows and Office ISO Download Tool
Then try to boot from a USB flash drive. Use Rufus to built it.

The dvd work fine and loads the repair disc but I don't have a computer image for this laptop and the prompt is to press any key but the only way to open the windows 7 installation disk is to load with an operating system already installed. I can open in the other desktops I have but only after I use the windows auto run feature or open folder to the exe file .I cannot access the disk without a system on the computer. My question is can it be open in dos as you can execute functions in dos and thought maybe I could use that but now I am going to make an iso copy and hopefully load it that way Thanks for all the help

What you need to do is access the one time boot menu. To do that you press the power button and immediately press and hold down one of the F keys or the Esc (escaped) key. We need to know the model number of your Asus laptop for us to tell you which F key to press. I just did a Google search and it appears a lot of Asus laptops use the Esc key. I would try that first, if that don't work, try F8. When the menu comes up, use the up or down arrow keys to choose CD or DVD, then press Enter.

Thanks to everyone for all your help. I have my laptop humming like a happy kitten. I tried all the advice that was offered and in the end there was only one problem. The dvd would not read the install disks correctly. The player will likely need to be replaced sooner than later. It does read disks but stumbles with the installation disks. The recovery disks work but the new drive size is too small and I tried shrinking and should have worked but didn't. In the end I loaded a downloaded iso image that got windows to loaded. Of course the system wouldn't recognize any of my keys. So I copied my windows install disk to a portable hdd that the ios image was on and over wrote the iso. I entered the key and also entered my original drivers disk and then further updated my drivers. Once again I thank everyone for their contribution as I used all the advice in some manner and I now understand Asus is just about as anal as Microsoft at making things confusing. In the end I used the delete key the esc key and F2 get the job done. Thanks again:D
