Windows 7 Home Prem. 64bit update issues

Am having problems with 17 (failed) Windows 7 updates (Error code 80070308). I've checked the web and tried updating using the Windows Standalone feature, without success. Also tried Registry Reviver but only through the scan function; did not download the fix. I don't know anything about them, and was afraid I would add to the problem. One thought - I lost I.E. several months ago and am having problems uploading it (error message says I already have it on my computer) so I'm using Mozilla Firefox. Is not having I.E. on my computer related to the update failures?
