Hi,

This might have been covered already but am I correct in thinking that there are not any other differences in the E version apart from the internet broswer not being included?

Thanks,

Thanks,

As far is i know the IE thing is the only difference.

Windows 7 E is Windows 7 without Internet Explorer 8 — or any other browser — preinstalled. The company is intending to release Windows 7 E in Europe in the hopes of potentially heading off the worst of the remedies expected to be imposed by European Commission authorities who have yet to issue their final rulings in the Opera browser-bundling antitrust case against Microsoft.

And you are not able to update from vista as far as i know. You have to make a clean install.

Is there anything else left out of E? Wasnt WMP removed from a previous version of windows once?

tbh i wouldnt mind if they removed wmp its an awful media player which i never use.

i think microsoft os's should come without things like wmp, windows msgr etc and if you want them you can download them from the windows site if your os is genuine.

Some info on Win7 E install
Installing E editions of Windows 7

Go to your preferred browser of choice and instead of running the application, save it to your preferred storage device whether that is a DVD, USB or an external storage device, have that handy for when you install Windows 7 as this will be needed for you to be able to get onto the internet.

Seams no inbuilt way to get a browser. Not ideal for the less tech savy people.

Hi,

Ok thanks for your replies.

I take it at the moment there is no way to perform a repair install of this once its been lunched due to it not having an upgrade option?

I would say that you could use ie7 as they do state explorer of your choice.

They also have an N version which has no WMP & no internet explorer, same price though.

If you got the E version of Windows 7 could you still do a repair install or not?

From what i've read its a clean install only, no repair or update, as its being treated as a new os. thats why they state that you need to backup all your old settings, data etc.

I suspect you can do a repair install.

If that's the case, may want to uninstall IE8 first , do the repair install, then reinstall IE8.

I have a Vista dvd with N editions on as well as regular editions. From memory - pretty sure you get the Upgrade option if you load the dvd while booted into windows.

No reason this would be different.

The real concern is - can you use an E product key with any install dvd - or ( as I suspect) the key may only work with certain dvd's. I hope not.

SIW2, you really think that an E or N product key won't work on a US install? i already ordered HP-N and was hoping to install RTM when it leaks, then just drop my key in when it arrives in October. hrmm.

apparently E and N cannot do upgrade installs because upgrading over Vista would leave IE/WMP intact...

It depends how MS have implemented it. I have a horrible feeling it will be the same way they did it with the Vista N versions.

Some install media include the N version configs as well as the regular versions.

Presumably , one of those is needed if you have an N product key:

NVERSIONS-2009-07-17_134931.jpg

It should be possible to use an E product key with a regular install media - I will be looking for a workaround when I get hold of it.
