Hey guys new to the forums and have been searching through them trying to find a solution for the past few weeks.

Basically I have an Asus laptop that had a hard drive failure a little while ago and I was forced to replace the drive. In doing this I had to reinstall windows 7 using a copy from a friend as I never had one since it came with my laptop. The key is printed on the bottom which I typed in, it installed everything was fine for say a week. Now it wants me to validate, i've done this probably 5 times already using the automated phone system over the past 2 weeks and it just keeps coming back.

Well now i've given up activating it and just let me windows run thinking its not genuine and some help would be great! I have heard it will want you to activate if there is a hardware change but the hard drive swap was the only change made.

Regards

All they do is tell me to contact support and give me the run around. Last time I called they said they didn't know the issue and kept trying to give me the code to activate windows which is less than useless to me at the moment.

What is the make/model of machine?

The problem is that Windows thinks that the hardware has changed significantly - which requires a code from an Activation operator to refresh the licensing.

You could try this...

Recreate the Licensing Store
Go to Start > All Programs > Accessories
Right-Click on Command Prompt and select Run as Administrator - accept the UAC prompt
Run the following commands in the Command Prompt window, using the Enter key at the end of each

net stop sppsvc
(wait until the service has stopped before entering the following lines)

CD %windir%\ServiceProfiles\NetworkService\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\SoftwareProtectionPlatform
REN tokens.dat tokens.bar
net start sppsvc
slui.exe

After a couple of seconds the Windows Activation dialog will appear.
You may be asked to re-activate and/or re-enter your product key, or Activation may occur automatically.
If you are asked for your Key, use the one on the COA sticker on the machine's case

Reboot and Post back with a new MGADiag report.

(Note: the Line 'CD %win......\SoftwareProtectionPlatform' is all on one line - it may be broken in the Forum listing)

Hi sorry for the late reply I have been without the laptop for a while I still have the activation issues after trying all the above information. Unfortunately now when I try to reactivate i have to call microsoft because i've supposedly activated to many times and they are less than helpful...Is there anything else I can possibly try as I am currently using windows that is claiming its not genuine because I got sick of activating it 4 times a week!

Please post a new MGADiag report.

No security software currently installed Microsoft security essentials. Currently no registery tools or anything, in the past on the old HDD I had to use them once or twice but this is a brand new HDD. Only things on it are some movies and tv shows, two games and microsoft office. I did have to install a lot of drivers so my keyboard shortcut functions would work. But thats about it.

Asus machines usually come pre-installed with an AV - can you remember which one?
You should run the AV manufacturer's cleanup tool after uninstalling it...
If you didn't do it then (or don't remember), then run it now.
You can run all of these, if you can't remember which was installed...

Download theMcAfee removal tool from:

http://download.mcafee.com/products/licensed/cust_support_patches/MCPR.exe

Click Save, andsave the file to a folder on your computer.

Navigate to thefolder where you saved the file.

right-click onMCPR.exe and select 'Run as Administrator' to run the removal tool.

when complete,reboot.

Download theNorton Removal Tool from here https://www-secure.symantec.com/norton-support/jsp/help-solutions.jsp?lg=english&ct=united+states&docid=20080710133834EN&product=home&version=1&pvid=f-home

Close all otherprograms, then run the tool. When it's complete, reboot the machine whether it asks for it or not.

Afterthe reboot, open an Elevated Command Prompt, and run the following command

NETSH WINSOCK RESET

You'llbe advised to reboot - do so.

Download the AVGRemover from here

http://www.avg.com/us-en/utilities

Follow theinstructions for running it, and then reboot the machine (whether it asks forit or not, and whether the program rebooted already or not).

Also, next time it flags as non-genuine, run the MGADiag report WITHOUT re-activating, and post it - then wait for a response again without re-activating, and we'll see if we can pin the error down.

Depends how you installed the OS - if you used the manufacturer's Recovery media, then it's likely to have reinstalled the AV, at least partially.
If you cloned the old to the new, then the original dregs will still be present.

If you used a downloaded or retail DVD, then it shouldn't have any AV present.

In that case, unless you installed an AV before MSE, then you can ignore it :)

Probably the best thing to do then is a general file and disk check...

Please run a full CHKDSK and SFC scan....

Click on Start > All Programs > Accessories

Right-click on the Command Prompt entry

Select Run as Administrator and accept the UAC prompt - the ElevatedCommand Prompt window should pop up.

At the Command prompt, type

CHKDSK C: /R

and hit the Enter key.

You will be told that the drive is locked,

and the CHKDSK will run at he next boot - hit the Y key, pressEnter, and then reboot.

The CHKDSK will take a few hours depending on the size of the drive,so be patient!

After the CHKDSK has run, Windows should boot normally (possiblyafter a second auto-reboot) -

then run the SFC.

SFC -System File Checker -Instructions

Click on Start > All Programs > Accessories

Right-click on the Command Prompt entry

Select Run as Administrator and accept the UAC prompt - the ElevatedCommand Prompt window should pop up.

At the Command prompt, type

SFC /SCANNOW

and hit the Enter key

Wait for the scan to finish - make a note of any error messages -and then reboot.

Copy the CBS.log file created(C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log) to your desktop (you can't manipulate itdirectly) and then compress the copy and upload it to your reply

Post a new MGADiag report with details of any error messagesencountered.

There are a huge number of minor errors in the background log -

Please downloadand save the CheckSUR tool from http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947821

(you'll need tolook in the details for Windows 7, downloading from the Microsoft DownloadCenter)

Run it - The toolcan take anywhere from 5 mins to a couple of hours to run (or 'Install')depending on how much it has to do, and may exit silently - it may appear tofreeze for most of that time, but be patient.

The result islogged in the C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log file - and an archive …\checksur.persist.log file

Then zip theCheckSUR.log and upload it to your reply.
