I'm using Windows 7 Home and had problems logging on to samba drives because of the username/password issue.

Since the Home edition denies access to edit security policies to change the LM/NTLM Reponses settings, what I do is to call out the Credential Manager to set up credential by entering the drives' IP addresses, my username and password.

I, now, can access my mapped network drives everytime I double-click on them without being asked for username and password again.

The other option that may or may not be feasable depending on the device you're accessing is to upgrade Samba to version 3.
Version 3 supports NTLMv2 authentication.
