Windows 7 Home to Pro Upgrade Problem

I have a laptop that came with Windows 7 Home. I need to upgrade to Pro for some classes I am taking. I bought the DVD and started the upgrade, but after asking what type of install I am doing (upgrade or custom) it lists a Windows Compatability Report that tells me I can't upgrade from Home to Pro this way and to go to the Windows Anytime Update. I have tried doing that, but then it says install was unsuccessful. The help desk told me that the disk should do it, it should not redirect to Anytime Update. Anyone know what the problem is?

Welcome to the forum.

What did the compatibility report say? Are you trying to go from 32-bit to 64-bit? What are your system specs? A little more detail is needed.

The compatibility report says that I should use Windows Anytime Update. Two lines, that's it. At least that's all I could get out of it. There was no link and no way to scroll down.

It's a 64 bit system and the upgrade is for that.

It's Windows Anytime Upgrade you want, not Windows Anytime Update.

Try this:

Click Start>All Programs>Windows Anytime Upgrade



Click Enter an Upgrade Key



Enter the Win 7 Pro product key of the DVD you bought.

Click Next and follow the Wizard's instructions.

It's Windows Anytime Upgrade you want, not Windows Anytime Update.

Try this:

Click Start>All Programs>Windows Anytime Upgrade

This method worked for my upgrade to 7 Pro. I was up and running in about 15 or 20 min. Didn't even need the disc.

Yes, I know. My mistake in typing. I was using Anytime Upgrade and it wasn't working. It would get to a certain point and then tell me that the upgrade was unsuccessful. The help desk continues to tell me that the disk should work, that I should not use Anytime Upgrade. Their latest recommendation was to try the custom install. Any thoughts?

No install files needed.
Only the Upgrade key is need.
Anytime upgrade only adds-on the Programs & Features from version to version.

Okay. I just tried Anytime Upgrade three more times, still hasn't worked. It runs for about 5 minutes saying that it is Starting Upgrade, then stops and says Upgrade Not Successful. No explanation for why it didn't work.

After Upgrade? Anytime Upgrade says the computer will automatically restart.

If you have installed SP1 you'll need to uninstall it first to use Windows Anytime Upgrade.

The upgrade from Home Premium to Professional will look for Windows Home Premium, not Windows Home Premium SP1.

SP1 (KB976932) can be unistalled via Control Panel>Programs>Uninstall a Program.

Actually mine went pretty smooth with SP1 installed, but I think there's something else going on here if the OP is having this much trouble upgrading, it certainly couldn't hurt to try it without SP1.

I find it listed by further going into "Installed Updates" under
Service Pack for MS Windows (KB976932) if the update was not carried out manually.
