I'll like to believe that it would be released by July or August, but if not by then, I say January 2010.
At the same time, there are people out there who really want the final to be released, but not at the expense of driver , or software incompatibility issues.
That would be disastrous, so personally I would wait till Microsoft gets it right.

Agreed. There are still way too many incompatibilities for Microsoft to release that early. Hopefully they have learned from past mistakes...

January 2010 would easily fit the time table there. While there's quite a bit of anticipation of a late October release with the RTMs going out to manufacturers in August?

You wouldn't expect it to be that soon since the RCs were just released publicly until the end of June with MS hopes of a larger feedback base on anything else in the way of bugs or suggestions for improvements. That would also figure in with the first expiration date seen as 3/1/2010 if the January report there had held true. But MS later realized a little more time would be needed seeing the date pushed back until 6/1/2010.

Apparently Microsoft have already gave us a somewhat more accurate date for Windows 7.

Microsoft have said that they will finalize Windows 7 in mid-August and that it will be delivered to the public in time for the 2009 holiday season. To be more accurate again, the public will be able to get their hands on the final version on the 15th of October this year going by the current schedule.

That seems just about right for the time being and it would also seem obvious why Microsoft wouldn't be planning on another January release.

That's if all goes well? Immediately after releasing the RCs the 32bit version had a bug that got past MS seeing an immediate patch. For most here who build their own cases there hasn't been too many bugs found with the RCs.

For premade systems on the other hand people that finally see those go on not having tested the 7000s may be the ones to suddenly run into various problems. But that's also why there are large service packs to follow as well.

Well yeah you know Microsoft, remember what happened just before Vista RTM with Build 5840?

When I first installed the RC I only ran it for a week then decided to do a clean install of it again due to a weird issue with WMP 12 then about a week after that I performed an in-place upgrade to Build 7127.

Can't really say I tested many of my games ect, only Fallout 3 which appeared to be fine.

Anything I've read recently indeed indicates MS on track for an August RTM -- three months after RC -- and product on shelves for the holidays.

I'd expect they'd like to hit the back to school market if they can have it to OEM's by September-ish, but we'll see.

In the long-term, it's indeed far more critical they get it right than they get it out as fast as possible, but they indicated the RC was tracking well so far.

Glaring security holes, or things like the patch they issued for the RC that would even impact most program installations, are what they really really need to catch before it's out the door.

Well I would rather see they get smoothed out overall rather then rushing an unfinished product out the door to begin with. I think they learned that one fast between ME and later XP needing SP1 to play catch up with the sudden increase in drive capacity seen around then. 16gb to 250gb in a heart beat lead to some problems there fast.

thats because by then MS expects/expected you to install the RC by then. That has no real indication on the actual Final release or date

not me my friend. i dont think you can base your statement the way you have. Its not premade vs custom, its old vs newish hardware, and the variance of that could be AND is the issue at hand. With this point, this negates your view and takes the opposite side. Think about it. The Dell's of the world are going to have support before some small company that only makes certain peripheals and chipsets. This was the case during XP testing days, the onboard sound worked, but creative was having fits back then. Then if you recall, the need for an aspi.dll layer driver for such programs like ECD creator, and then there was the issue with adaptec IDE controllers which took forever to fix (even up till RTM there was the issue still).

Speaking of Dell you have to look back at how some people were having problems seeing Vista's SP1 go on the newer models while others with new custom builds saw no problems. Even HP and others occasionally will have problems with something where a tweak or special fix is needed according to their own support information.

At other times MS will see problems corrected for those having update problems with anything new first out. Don't forget as well that new hardwares can also bring along their own new problems while stuff that's been out for some time has seen the bugs worked out already.

Well it appears that MS may just see it's intentions of seeing 7 available for the holidays since the Server 2008 R2 RC is now available at this time.
