Windows 7 'Incredibly Stable,' Intel Expert Says

The trial version of the next Windows operating system has won a key endorsement from a software expert at chipmaker Intel (NSDQ: INTC), a company that, despite being one of Microsoft (NSDQ: MSFT)'s closest partners, was so leery of Vista that at one point it banned the widely maligned OS from its corporate workstations.

I must agree with how Incredibly Stable windows 7 is.... but unfortunately when i speak with may friends and family.... they are so skeptical about it since trying vista.... i cant help but feel that its gonna take a lot of convincing people to upgrade to 7

I hope M$ have a really good marketing plan to win back all the people that have been scared away from windows since vista

Yes I agree, very stable for a beta. I am running Vista ultimate also on dual boot and no problems so far. Obviously drivers will be sorted out at the final release.

i agree with the previous posters, remarkably stable to date. we are running two dedicated desktops, and two laptops configured to dual boot vista (toshiba) without issues. running vista lone, the laptops were essentially mobile doorstops and were due to be blown away and fitted with windows xp just to get some work out of them. very few of our commercial clients would go anywhere near vista, but windows 7 will sell itself if they just tweak it out and keep the junk off it come retail release.

i think IT professionals are already for the most part onboard with this one, so that puts the ball in Microsoft's court, it is literally at this point I think, their game to lose. I don't see microsoft doing that this time having learned their lesson with vista, and keeping an eye on a still small but increasing market share from apple. before this, more and more clients seriously looked at apple as an alternative. i think the big loser here will be linux because as alternatives go, they are driven by dissatisfaction by the public with the primary product.

windows 7 should also extend the usable life of current hardware already in place at small commercial enterprise so i see deployement of windows 7 as far as we are concerned as a no brainer in the not so distant future.

On a consumer level I can say that I already love Windows 7, and I have only been using it for 3 days so far. Many of the things they've done is brilliant and makes you wonder why it took so long to come up with something this intuitive. The search function is brilliant, I've only had one full crash yet, and I haven't exactly been careful, at most times it just freezes for a bit, and settles it's differences with whatever app I am running... Unlike Vista did, almost up until SP1.

I think, in a slightly exaggerated manner, Seven is as much launch ready as Vista was shortly before SP1, perhaps more.

Lol - You're forgetting a lot of W7 was already in Vista - it was just too aggressive in memory use for the average user.

So, that, in fact, supports your credo - why *did* it take so long? The answer is in the fact that, though being based upon the NT kernel of yesteryear, it is nearly a completely re-written kernel - and thus the rest of the OS had to be re-written a lot as well in order to accommodate the new kernel.

That is a *lot* of rewriting - and that does not include any *new* code needed for new features....

If that is the case then why are there endless pages about Windows 7 crashing? It's far from being stable in my opinion. I've had crashes moving files throught the network or just attempting to download something, so have many many others.

I think the guy from Intel needs to have his Windows 7 up and running for a week non stop before he decides if it's truely stable or not. It's no where near as stable for me as Vista is.

I have no doubt that Microsoft will work out these problems though.

I've had seven up and running for a month and have had no crashes of seven itself.

Lucky you, wish I could say the same. The antivirus crashes alone account for most of them but I never installed any of those. Many complaints about crashing from moving files around also. Hopefully it all gets fixed soon with updates.

I would say it is very stable and does not crash.

I have not had a full system lock up since I had XP lol. Vista or 7 never gave me problems!


The only issues I had with 7 was it would not install anything. Find that info in another post, but since it's fixed now I have nothing to complain about

Seems to be getting better for me as the updates come. Of course we have to expect some compatibility issues with a Beta version.

I think the update process and the various fixes will be interesting.

I even ran Prime Blend again just to make sure but it's solid there.

For a pre-release Beta, 7 is (to date) by far the most stable Beta I, and many others, have worked with. Yah, there will be universal problems and allot of individual configuration problems too, but this thing is almost a "roll out ready" product in it's beta form.

I wouldn't be surprised that when it is a public release, it has the fewest "Known bugs" of any OS to date. Just as an example, XP rolled out with 1500 known bugs yet to be fixed, Vista had 500. If W7 can come in under that 500 mark it would be quite an accomplishment IMO.
Of course since this is built off of the Vista platform, they at least had a running start, unlike Vista that was almost a completely new write. Now that must have been a hellova job but it sure needed doing...too many known security risks in the older kernels that were constantly patched over patches and you can't fix a leaky dam no matter how much duct tape you use...

I for one was glad to see MS rewrite the entire kernel with Security as the driving factor and NOT compatibility.

to date, two desktop units, two laptops and a total of two , yes (2) lockups, running 24/7. One reason unknown, the other running wireless, large file transfer which has been symptomatic for the laptop unit. running vista, the toshiba lap locked up at least three or four times per day. no lockups observed when using the onboard lan, two thumbs up.

Lots of different systems and software out there. Have you read the forums lately? So many BSOD events I've lost track. To me stable means zero BSOD events and it's painfully obvious that Windows 7 is far from that.

For some it's a dream come true, for others it's a true beta test with it's trials and tribulations. I think it was wise of Microsoft to let this Beta out so they can get feed back and get most of the fixes implimented before it's officially released.

I'am also hopeful that each issue will be resolved over time. I like to think that is the purpose of this beta.

Windows 7 is great for me and I really like it but there are many compatability issues that seem to cause BSOD events for many that need to be resolved before it's final release.

I have not had any BSOD issues, no driver issues, or AV issues on 3 different machines. The only problem I have had so far is an add-on for IE8 from myspace & its a picture uploader, I reported it & also some compatability view issues but thats it. I use Ableton Live & the latency is hardly anything. All of my software I have installed is working except for my portable version of DVDFab. All in all I an impressed, to the point to where I can't wait to pre order it!

I think that's too lofty a goal my friend. XP is still considered the MOST stable OS MS ever made and people still report BSOD's daily. That is a part of being, or trying to be, compatible with 10,000,000 different devices and configurations. As long as there are OS's, there will be BSOD's, or the next equivilent of them...it's inevitable really.

As for Beta releases, this is by far the most stable I've used, and I dig into everything when I test them out. In past beta's, more areas were still under construction than were working, but it's different in 7..almost everything is up and working (too a degree anyway )

I agree, the more eyes looking at things, the more things are found and the more good suggestions are offered to MS. This one just looks and feels like no other beta I've tested and I've tested since W95, I am very impressed!
Unfortunately, we, nor MS can ever know whether allot of those BSOD's are user caused, or the beta is installed on dodgy hardware setups, so it's near impossible to fix them all. But we can always keep hope!

I have it running on 2 desktops and my three teenage boys laptops. No major problems, and ZERO BSOD on either desktop for 2 weeks. I thougt i would never leave xp and still used it more that vista ultimate until now. My xp was only 32 bit and had windows 7 not been in the testing phase by now, i would have purchased xp x64 to replace my vista x64. Now it's gonna be W7 on all my computers and my 5 young adult kids computers. The price for 8 new operating systems will be well worth it when final release hit the market.
