I keep losing my Win 7 indexing ability. No reason; it works one day, login next day and it can't find any files. I've tried all the 'solution' I can but none work for me. Three Qs:
1. Why does the index apparently disappear for NO reason?
2. How can I re-establish it (I know it is still there unless Win 7 had deleted it) WITHOUT a re-index which is painfully slow for my .c. 30,000 items
3. When I hit 'Pause' in indexing, where is the 'restart' button, otherwise it will pause forever won't it?

I will now try to attach the methods that have failed (I hope). Sorry, can't find it!!!!

Windows 7 Inexing

I am still indexing. It started 10:00 today and at 17:00 was still going having indexed 44,000 items. Should it take that long?? I can't afford that sort of time if the index keeps disappearing and I have to repeat the exercise. As a mid point it had indexed about 22,500 items after 4 hours (14:00)

Indexing shouldn't take that long. For the actual problem, I can't really help you. Did you tried the going to Advanced and Rebuilding the index?

Hi Terry and welcome to the Forum.
Bit confused with your numbers  In post #1 you have 30,000 items and post #44,000?
More importantly you don't say whre the items are stored? On the C drive, separate internal hard drive, external hard drive or where? Please also fill in your full specs! See here: System Info - See Your System Specs - Windows 7 Help Forums

Sorry comrade. Deatils
Windows 7, indexing C drive, timings 30,000 items was mid-index operation (4 hrs) , 44,000 near the end (6 hours). I left it running and when I looked later it had obviously finished as there was no trace of the indexing window. Not sure of final time or records indexed but the 6 hours for 44 K records indexed is a bit over the top, especially as the first few 1000s took a matter of minutes then it got slower as it clicked up more records. Later in the indexing I sat and looked at it, say at 28,000 records and it didn't clock up even 1 extra record indexed after c. 2 or 3 minutes.
I can index things now but boy, what a price to pay especially if it chooses to go into hiding again soon.

Malwarebytes is not a "proper" anti virus but it is a highly recommended malware detector. Many members of this Forum recommend it. I am no expert but it looks to me as if you have "collected" a virus due to lack of protection.

Yes I used 'advanced' and 'rebiuld' as all the other suggested methods failed to find the index.

Sorry but I don't understand the question? I have lots of other stuff installed but how can that be relevant to indexing??
