I am about to install windows 7 Ultimate to an ssd. Then have another HDD for programmes etc. Will there be any special problems with this approach? Where would be the best place for the swap file?

Thanks

Albert

I would not overoptimize the system. The Win7 installer does all the basic settings when it discovers an SSD. Other than that I would only move the user data into a seperate data partition - on the SSD if there is enough space or to the HDD or a mix. I would also delete the hibernation file with cmd command:

powercfg.exe -h off

But I would definitely not play with the pagefile - just leave it as is. I also found that enabling Superfetch is an advantage. And do not get caught by this hype about avoiding to write to the SSD. It is designed for 10 years of write operations (average usage) and I am sure you will not keep it that long.

Most tweaks will cost you on Win7. It is perfectly balanced at install just needing normal settings.

I agree with everyone else.

No tweaking really needed, other than disable hiberfile.
I would also let 7 handle the install. Just highlight the SSD as unallocated and and hit Instal. It will create partitons, format, and align correctly all on its own.

I also disable system restore on mine, and let Acronis handle all backups automatically.

I have also re-enabled Superfetch. After a period of a week, it does help. The writes it does do are insignificant in the grand scheme of things.

Wishmaster just reminded me that I also disabled System Restore because I do daily images at bootup. Here is my partition setup on an 80GB Intel, a 320GB HDD and an external disk. In addition I use 2 other external disks (250 and 640GB) that are disconnected when not in use. You will notice that Windows7 takes only 16.3GB of space - and that since 6 months despite a healthy selection of programs installed.
