Windows 7 Install Restarts after first boot

Hi,

I am trying to install Windows 7 Build 7000 on my computer. But it does not seem to want to continue install after the first restart.

Here is what I did:

I put in the dvd, and boot my computer from the DVD. I set the DVD to be the only boot device in the BIOS. The installer starts. I go through all the steps needed for install. It comes to the first restart, and the computer restarts. After a lot of waiting, the computer brings up the first step to the install. Where it shows the "Install Now" Button. (The install basically starts from step One again).

Not sure what I did wrong through all this. My computer Specs are AMD 6400 2.20Ghz, 2 Gigs of Ram, Clean 40 Gig IDE Hard drive, on Different IDE channel then the DVD Drive (Not sure if that is important). Linksys Wireless Add in Card, BFG Nvidia GeForce 9600 GT.

So if someone could help me get Windows 7 up and running, that would be great!

I forgot to say that I tried to install Windows 7 off a virtual drive from within XP, but that didnt seem to work after the first restart also. It did put the windows boot loader on my computer, but didnt finish the Windows 7 Install. I have a feeling that it tried to over-right my Windows XP install, because the boot loader only comes up when my XP drive is plugged in. When I tried installing 7 with the CD, I had my XP drive unplugged. So if 7 tried to install on my XP drive, how can I get the files off it, that I dont want on it anymore, and install Windows 7 on my other drive, in a XP and 7 Duel-boot.

The first mistake was setting the optical as first and not setting the 7 drive as default instead. If your board has the F1 or other F key option to select the boot device you simply select the optical drive for the one time boot needed for seeing the setup files copied over. Once the installer restarts the system the 7 drive is automatically booted from to see the installation completed.

When replugging the XP drive in which sounds like the first ide drive mastered on the first cable that automatically becomes the default hard drive in the order. With the XP unplugged was that the data cable or just the power plug? Either way you put that drive out of commission.

For the most part it sounds like the optical drive was left as the first in the boot order until replugging the XP drive back before the 7 installation completed itself. Once 7 is running on the second drive you can replug the XP drive and still see XP load while booting from the 7 drive by setting up a dual boot. No files are placed on the XP drive while XP boot files are coped over to the 7 drive.

Correct, the XP drive is the first IDE drive mastered on the first cable. When I tried the install I did not have the data cable or the power cable plugged in. So the drive was just sitting in my computer.

It sounds like I just didnt have my boot order right. I will have to try that, and see if it works.

That happens too often where you simply forget to go back into the bios a second time once all files are copied to the hard drive and what? the Windows installer comes up again. "aaaahhhh... crap!"

With a good deal of prebuild systems(HP, Dell, Gateway, Sony, etc.) or laptops the boot device menu is often the F1 or F12 key you press at post time while custom builds will likely see the F8 key used for that before Windows starts to load if installed.

It's a time saver meaning fewer trips into the bios setup as well as your next project of trying out a live Linux cd or using a bootable cd for resizing or partitioning a drive. Once the system restarts the default hard drive takes over from there.

(I know that one well enough seeing XP and the 32bit 7 beta on the second drive while Vista and the 64bit 7 reside on the first here. Always doing something! )

Why install build 7000 now when 7057 is out?

Apparently off of torrents sites only. That's why I still have the 7000 build on here since there likely won't be any RC public release seen.

does the UPG. version have a boot loader.
If not can you create it using bootrec.exe/ fixboot from cmd. ? and bootrec.exe/fixmbr as well
