Hello uffypotter.

I would suggest that after you have copied out or made back-ups of the data you need to save to external media you use Step One of this tutorial at the link below to do a wipe (secure erase) to the entire Hard Disk Drive, running this then using the outline in Step Two #2 to create and format a single 100GB partition using diskpart will get you a clean all and a chkdsk /r for the best possible space to install Windows 7 to.

Be sure to post back with any further questions you may have and to keep us informed.
   Information

After you have made backups of everything you care to save and you want to do a real wipe "clean all" to the Hard Disk Drive (HDD) have a look at this tutorial at the link below, it over-writes everything, all the old Windows code including all the old Windows drivers, giving you the best possible space to install Windows 7 to; it goes hand-in-hand with a clean install.

SSD / HDD : Optimize for Windows Reinstallation

How to Do a Clean Installation with Windows 7

Use the clean all command in this tutorial:

& stay away from third party partitioning tools.

Yes we read that earlier in the thread.

This is starting to add up to HD failure of some sort. Run the System File Checker and Surface scan with both boxes ticked using Partition Wizard.

Then try to wipe the HD again from Disk tab.

Run one of the System Information tools or look inside to see what brand HD you have, then download and burn to CD the DOS HD repair scan for your brand HD. Run the extended test which can diagnose and repair HD.

Next boot the Win7 DVD, at first screen press Shift + F10 to open a Command Line, then run http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/433-disk-check.html

Now try to wipe the HD again from PW CD or using Diskpart to see if it works now.

i'm running active kill disk now

Using Method Two of the tutorial ...

If you know first, the volume/drive letter of the volume the boot files are stored on and second, you know the volume drive letter the Windows OS is stored on, then give it a go, it can't hurt to try.

It's a good sign if Kill Disk will wipe the HD.

Next from the Disk tab of Partition Wizard bootable CD, run Surface Scan with both boxes ticked to test HD. If it indicates bad sectors you'll need to determine the HD make so you can run the maker's diag/repair full CD scan: http://www.carrona.org/hddiag.html

Now rightclick on the HD to Create a New partition of the entire HD, format NTFS Primary, assign letter, OK. Then rightclick again to Modify>Set to Active, OK, Apply all steps.

Then rightclick on new partition to Check File System.

Try install again to new Active partition.

Can you post back a screenshot of your full Disk Mgmt drive map and listings, using Snipping Tool in Start Menu so we can look at it for you?
