I have a laptop with no OS and no CD drive. I would like to make the hard drive bootable with the w7 installation files on the HDD so that when the laptop boots up it starts the install right from the hard drive, Please point me to a site that has the procedure or write a detailed guide on how to do this. i have a desktop available to me with an IDE to USB adapter for the laptop HDD. Thanks to all in advance.

With your conversion cable you can format the laptop HD just like a USB installer using any of the methods to do this, however the problem is that the installation files need to be on a separate partition to do the install, but all of the methods to do this format the entire USB device.

So when you plug the laptop HD back in it should boot to installer but won't be able to overwrite itself.

There is one thing to try, however. After formatting the laptop HD via USB cable to create HD installer, install free Partition Wizard to desktop to attempt to Resize the install partition by as much as it will shrink. Now plug HD back into laptop, boot into HD installer, choose Custom install to create a partition and format in the space you shrunk.

To format USB installer, I use UltraISO trial version: open ISO on FIle tab, Write Image on Bootable tab, Format, Write.
