During installation using 64 bit dvd it says the product key isn't valid, but it works fine on 32 bit dvd.

Any ideas?

Thanks very much.

I've give Microsoft a call on that one. That same key should work for either version.

These keys can only be used once.
If you already tried the key in 32-bit then it'll show on MSFT computer as used, so phone them. When you try to activate it should give you that option.

I got the same issue. Upgraded from XP 32bit, but 64bit DVD wouldn't run in Windows. Booted from DVD and did a custom clean install, everything installed fine, got to the Install Key screen and was told key was invalid. Punched it in several times, same result. MS Techs told me bc it was 10/21 and that's why the key wasn't working, tried again on 10/22 same result. Can't get to the desktop until this key is entered. I'm sending it back and going to go buy another copy at BB. Hopefully it will work unless someone has some other idea?

So I installed the 32 bit..activated it. Then I decided to try the 64 bit again and it worked! Strange. :)

Alot of people with the "upgrade" version of W7 seem to be having this problem. Not heard of anyone with the full version reporting this issue...
Ex-brit mentioned you can only use a key once? I REALLY hope that's not true!

I meant in one installation at any given moment. It just means sometimes a phone activation is necessary.

This issue seems to be confined to upgrade versions, not sure why.

Clarification: You can only use the retail key on one installation at a time. The license belongs to you for life and can migrate as often as you want, but only on one machine at a time.

With Upgrades it is a bit more complicated: the key becomes tied to the underlying OS, which if it is OEM means tied to the motherboard of the one machine, or if the underlying XP/Vista is retail then the Upgrade is also portable and can migrate freely with that XP/Vista retail copy - but just on one machine at a time.

Now, here's the topper: MS Technet gives the above EULA, but admits they have no way to enforce any of this except the "one machine at a time" which they do track closely, so the Upgrade can functionally migrate to any machine whether OEM or Retail, just one at a time.
