Hello,

My uncle has setupped a small business factory, and he has bought 3 computers. Now i suggested him that he should purchase Windows 7 Home Basic as they just need them for accounting purposes etc.

But from the vendor from whom I was gonna purchase Windows has now confused me by saying that in businesses you cannot use Home Basic version of Windows and its only for Home use.

Is that statement correct ? Do i have to buy Windows 7 Professional for the facroty pc's ?

Thanks.

The vendor is BSing and trying to make you buy a higher priced edition. There is no condition that home basic cannot be used in a factory. Go ahead and buy as long as you are sure it does whatever you need in the factory setup.

Well i can't see it being a problem. At the end of the day, if they are seperate licences for each PC then it is still above board.

Best thing is, ring Microsoft and ask them directly, the vendor may be saying that to get you to buy enterprise edition which is very very expensive

Try here - Microsoft Worldwide Sites

That should be your local office.

See what they say

The retailer is trying to make some extra money, that's all - I see it all the time. The difference between the "Home" and "Professional" editions is primarily that the "Home" editions don't include features that are likely to be used only by busineses, and vice versa - the "Professional" editions contain business-oriented features not included in the home editions.

You can go to the Compare Microsoft Windows 7 Editions website to compare editions, so as to make a better informaed decision as to which edition is suited to your needs.

As an example, I am getting a new laptop that is bought by the University and which will be University property, although used only by me. It is coming with Home Premium pre-installed - basically because that's how the manufacturer is building the machine. While I will most likely change the OS to suit my needs and prejudices, it serves you as an example that there is certainly no requirement by anybody to use the "Home" versions of Windows only inside private residences, i.e. at your actual home.

So my advice is the same as already given - read the Microsoft website, decide which edition is right for you and go ahead and buy what you need.

P.S. It might be a cultural difference, but personally I would not discuss your uncle's factory with a software salesman.

For a Business I would not recommend home basic - For the file encryption alone I would
upgrade to at least Professional edition. Not to mention the other perks of advanced network backup.

Yet as it's already been said, there is no reason why you cannot install Home basic in a business environment.

Isn't Home Premium Family Pack available in India, too? Three licenses, one install media, nice price. According to this the price is Rs.7,500.

I know Microsoft ended Family Pack, then re-introduced it in certain markets. IF it's still available in India, I would choose it.
