Welcome to SF!

Could you explain how Windows 7 is looking for the drive? I can't really help you until I understand your problem clearly.

Thanks!

When i turn on the laptop a dialog box opens. it is titled, "location not available". The text in the dialog box is: E:\desktop refers to a location that is unavailable. it could be on a hard drive on this computer, or on a network. check to make sure that the disk is properly inserted, or that you are connected to the internet or your network, and then try again. if it still cannot be located, the information might have been moved to a different location.

I also checked the windows explorer. there is not a desktop folder on the explorer beneath the favorites folder.

thanks in advance for your assistance.

It sounds like a program is trying to run on startup, looking at your drive.

Search for msconfig in the start menu, and go to the Startup tab. You you please post a screenshot of that window using the snipping tool found in the start menu?

Thanks,
~JK

Hmm... hard to say. We can tell that one of your programs running on startup is trying to access something on that drive.

Does it give you any clues as yo what program it is?

The computer did not give any indication as to what program it was looking for other than the desktop file. I inadvertently sidestepped and came up with a fix for the problem.i just created a new user and windows created a new desktop. everything appears to be working fine now.

thanks
