Windows 7 loses network connection here and there..

Every so often, particularly if I am transferring files in the network, browsing net at the same time... Win 7 seems to lose its network connection. Get the yellow exclamation pnt on my network icon down near the clock, and the transfer will start complaining that it can no longer reach the other computer..

Good news is, that up to now, the network troubleshooter, has been pretty good about fixing the issue. It usually just resets the local area connection, and walla, I am back on the network. Still, can't help thinking that I never had this issue with previous versions of windows, or any other computer for that matter.

Before you ask, yes, my nic drivers are all as up to date as they can be at the moment..

Any help appreciated!

The first thing I would check is the IP-6 support of the wifi/nic. right click sys tray networking>open network and sharing> change adapter settings>goto adapter>properties Uncheck IP-6

The router and the switch in my network are both Gigabit capable, and I am using cat5e cable. Not that I feel like I have ever been able to see that kind of speeds with transfers, but I am hoping to double check that making this change won't affect speeds negatively..

IP-6 should not affect your speed except to maybe increase it.

hmmm.. interestingly, when transferring files between computers on the gigabit network, both of which have full gigabit nic cards.. I still seem capped at 100full.. For instance, when I open the task manager, and hit network tab, performance never goes above 9.97% of the full gigabit potential. It is like something is capping it. Further, if I try to browse the internet during said transfer, other computers, etc.. it is extremely slow, even though, according to the performance monitor 90% of the potential is not yet tapped... Any thoughts..?

Hmmm I figured out why... is because one adapter that is supposed to be a gigabit adapter, is running at 100 full. How do I force it to use gigabit..

Speed on the nic is set to auto negotiate.. there is no option to force it to use gigabit under speed/duplex settings..

Sweet.. got it working. left it on auto-negotiate. In my network, I have a gigabit wireless router, and a second gigabit wireless router setup simply as a switch.. I unplugged from the switch, such that each computer was plugged directly into the wireless gigabit router. right clicked my network icon down near clock, and told it to troubleshoot the network, which was showing a red x.. It reset local area connection, and speeds under task manager-network now showed gigabit.. I think the problem was just a single cat-5, not cat-5e cable on the network. I replaced it just now with a cat-5e, and was able to plug back into the switch, and retain the gigabit speeds..

Only thing now is that the speed never remains consistent. Attaching a screen shot that shows network monitor throughout transfer of a 4.5 gb file from one computer running gigabit to the one in question. At first, it stated 60 seconds, then it came down to 7% and stated 4 minutes.. then it started to cycle back and forth between decent and sucky speeds.. Actual transfer took 3 minutes.. any thoughts?

Talk about quintuplet posts. Try cleaning out various temporary files, and doing a disk cleanup. Make sure you don't have any viruses also. That's always a good thing to check when you have any problem with your computer. Is your wireless connection strong? If you're out of range, this could cause it to be inconsistent. Another thing to try, which has helped me a few times when having hardware issues, is to reinstall the driver. Once I got a corrupted one for no apparent reason. Reinstalled a different one and it worked like a charm.

Tweety - I'd fire you if you worked on my staff (actually you would never have been hired in the first place) and responded to someone with that kind of answer. You must not work professionally in the IT industry because that is a laughable answer to a problem of this type.

i know this is a tad old but wouldnt those speed variations be caused by cat5 wire since cat5 is recommened for up to 100mbs wouldnt cat6 solve that?
