Windows Live Mail is nearly identical to Windows Mail. Don't confuse it with the web based service. It is a standalone program. There is no need to try and make Windows Mail work on Seven.

I don't use Windows Mail and I only made the tutorial for others who wanted it, but you can't tell me they are almost identical, maybe in appearance but you can't even use a Windows Live account with Windows Mail so how are they the same.

A windows mail user (or Outlook Express user) would be very comfortable using Windows Live Mail under Seven. It has basically the same features with an enhanced visual design (subjective I presume).

You don't need to upgrade to get it to work, you just need to have the Vista files to replace the ones in Seven and I made a tutorial for this Months ago here. http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/5481-windows-mail.html?ltr=W

Thank you Mr Grim

I didn't look back that far.

I like that take ownership thingy. I have downloaded it but not tried it yet.

As you can see, I am new to this forum and my only other post was to try and get some help with recovering email histories which seem to be stuck in the Winmail storage folder and are not imported when the folder is??

http://www.sevenforums.com/general-discussion/3643-windows-mail-problem-2.html#post132080

Do you have any ideas about that?

Best regards

Email histories fixed.

It turned out that the culprit was Outlook.

To transfer out of windows mail, you need to transfer to Outlook and then onward to your selected email program. I had a triple boot setup, XP, Vista and Win 7. and was trying to transfer my email histories from Vista into Win 7.

I was running MS Office Home and Student, which does not have Outlook, so I loaded Outlook from my older Office XP Pro disk. I only installed Outlook, not the whole Office files and that was what caused the problem. My email histories transferred OK but were corrupted and I could not open them in Windows mail or Thunderbird under Win 7. In fact, they could not even be viewed.

I went back and loaded the whole of Office XP Pro and Outlook then did its transfer job correctly. I hope this helps someone caught in the same situation.

After dabbling in Thunderbird, I quite liked it and have decided to stay with it.

I perhaps should not be that enthusiastic about transferring everything to Win 7 RC, as shortly, the real Win 7 will be available and I understand an upgrade from the RC version is not possible.

Well the RTM is actually available already if you know where to look or have a Technet subscription and, moreover, there actually is an "unsupported" method to upgrade to RTM from RC versions (with instructions on how to do it provided by MS themselves) ;) and it works quite well. I did it. :D See Engineering Windows 7 : Delivering a quality upgrade experience for complete instructions. :geek:

Hi all

You can use the Windows Mail program from VISTA if you want to or don't like Windows live mail. Remember its older and won't be supported but I did post AGES ago on this forum how to do it so just search.

I'm happy with Outlook 2007 - Ooutlook 2003 and 2007 are much improved over the first version of Outlook included with office XP (Outlook 2002).

You can also download various email clients like that included with firefox etc -- your choice.

NOTE however that you might need a copy of windows XP to get Windows Mail stuff into Outlook -- you need by some quirk of design to import them into OUTLOOK EXPRESS and then you can import into OUTLOOK.

Cac handed I know but that's the only way I could get it to work from Windows Mail into Outlook.

Cheers
jimbo
