windows 7 media center with no remote

I need to set up windows media center on my sons computer. he has a verizon fios set top box.

we do not have a windows media center remote or any IR remote. all we have is the verizon remote for the verizon box.

that still dies not give you th eoption to bypass the IR check. i have been playing with this for the past day and a half. i just upgraded from XP mce and i had no problems with that.

Try..

..unplugging the remote dongle...An XP remote is not compatible with WMC in Vista or W7.

Or see if your card is compatible with latre versions of WMC.

that is not correct.

i have two machines that have been running xp mce for years now. my daughter has always had a original windows media center remote. my son has never had a remote, and the both worked fine. i just upgraded my son's computer.the one that has never had a remote.

Windows 7 will not continue the install/setup of media center for set top/cable/ Fios to without a remote. but yes it will work if i use my daughters XP mce remote.

but that is not an option for my sons computer.

i hope that made sense. I only have one MCE remote. and that is on the maching still running XP MCE. If I had to XP MCE remotes I would not be having this conversation.

but instaead of beating hy head against the wall any more. i have installed Hauppague's WinTV on the windows 7 machine and my son can watch tv using the Fios set top box remote. Just the way it should have worked for win & media center in the first place..

MS really screwed them self with that set up.

The Remotes made for XP MCE are not compatible with Vista or W7 and also are no longer made. Microsoft does not make the remotes anymore either. If you have a MS Remote it will not work with Vista or MCE.

As you have not provided any specifications of your hardware I can only provide basic replies.

I also am certain that if you properly remove the IR Receiver and drivers that WMC will not prompt for a remote (assuming your TV Tuner is compatible).

Where are you getting that from? I'm still using my remote setup from my XP Media Center Edition PC. I use it only because it's more responsive than the new one that came with my XPS 420.

What remote are you using? Are you controlling an STB? I am talking about the Microsoft XP MCE Remotes...and not ones that require special software or setup to work with W7 Media Center.

When XP MCE came out, most households in the USA did not use or require the use of STB's. Now it is the standard. In order for MCE to change the channel on a setup that uses an STB in Vista or W7, a Vista/W7 IR Receiver and Remote are required. Even the IR standard has changed on these devices from XP MCE to now. Microsoft has stopped making them and now licenses the manufacturing of the Green Button required remotes.

What exactly is the make and model of the remote you are using, what IR standard is it using and what dongle/ IR Receiver are you using? Did you have to customize anything? Does your Remote have 'RC6 IR' on the back?

Here are hundreds of people who had difficulty with old remotes/receivers and VMC....I suspect we are just now getting folks having similar issues when they upgrade from XP to W7.

The simple answer is (for a simple solution) that at least a Vista Certified IR Receiver and remote are required to control a Digital STB and your TV tuner must support it.

If you do not use an STB, you may also not need a remote, but again, there appears to be many users who cannot get to the point of understanding much of what is happening in the setup, which is based on auto-configuration files that MS uses to configure your devices. If you do not have an STB, you do not need the IR Receiver/Blaster to control it. You also do not 'need' a remote, but if the software and drivers that are installed are looking for one, the auto setup in MC will want to configure it.

These questions are best asked to the manufacturer of the TV Tuner and also to your cable/satellite provider for specific recommendations.

I had this issue as well. I told WMC that I didn't have cable but an antenna and only set on channel, channel 3. I then was able to use my set top box remote. You wont have a guide through WMC and all your recordings will have to be set manually.

I have the same issue as the original poster, with one proviso. The PC in question is a standard desktop with an AverTV capture card installed connected directly to my cable TV STB. It is a new system and does not, and never has had, a remote control.

I too would like to know how to bypass the irritating demand to setup a remote control, especially as in my case I do not have one at all and no way (or inclination) to physically install one.

Is that a new way for MS to collect WMC7 fees from millions of users - via royalties from IR Remote makers, while blocking STB setup in WMC without such special Remote? Why would I need one, having a perfectly working Remote that comes with the STB? Microsoft - did you forget about women's (and man's) right to choose? :shock:

Also, is there any way to choose, what TV Tuner Card to use with WMC to tune & watch all scanned channels this time, if several tuner cards are installed?

Media Center with No Remote..

Simple answer for simple question..

If you do not have a windows media center remote and cannot setup the IR under the setup and it will not give signal.

Open Media Center, do not go to setup. you should see static when you click into Live TV, NOW JUST PRESS THE NUMBER "3" ON YOUR KEYBOARD AND PRESS ENTER. Channel will change to 3 without remote and should show your cable signal now!
