Solved Windows 7 not connecting after entering user password

I am having issues trying to get to windows 7 to launch normally. It locked up and I had to do a hard shutdown. Now it will not launch normally. I get to the part where I enter my user password and press enter. Then screen then shows connecting with a cancel button but will go no further. I can get to my desktop in safe mode. I am suspecting a virus but haven't a clue how to resolve. I have MS Security Essentials running as my antivirus software. Any suggestions?

My first idea would be to use System Restore to return the PC to a date prior to the beginning of this problem.

I did a system restore and a system repair but that didn't resolve the issue. I finally entered my user password and waited as it did say connecting, but it had never taken that long before. It finally connected but was slow. I waited until I got my desktop up and then did a restart. Seems to be working fine now. Thanks for the replies.
