Windows 7 not reading blank cd/dvd, but other programs will....

I have tried all the fixes and suggestions on Microsoft's website, including deleting the low and high filters in the registry, and replacing the DVD drive. The problem is this: when I insert a blank CD or DVD, windows tells me it cant read the disk in the drive until it's formatted. However, other programs that write to blank CDs or DVDs (like ClondCD and Clone DVD) will. This forum is my last resort before reinstalling Windows 7 (Read the repair tutorial). Any help is appreciated.

ok. Setup new acct, as admin, shut down, restarted, logged in. no change. will try chkdsk again and get back with results. Again, thank you all for your help and suggestions.

Well.... I wasn't able to run chkdsk, enen scheduling it for restart, even in safe mode. Rerunning virus andmalware. Will keep you all posted. Thank you all again for your help.

Hello again. To update, I ran all the virus etc. checkers again, just to be sure. I am still not able to run CHKDSK, even under safe mode, and i'm not able to schedule it. Might it be a problem with windows explorer, or the BCD?

James this might be worth a run Kaspersky Rescue Disk 10 it runs without involving Windows and may find something not seen when running anti malware in Windows.

Read through the info first as you will need to make a bootable disk etc There are others but this is one I have used a fair bit in the past and it doesn't take long to run and costs nothing but a CD disk (worth keeping)

You might also explain a little more with what you're trying to do
As far as I know windows can't read what is blank or empty disk ?
So walk us through what you're doing exactly

If you're saying windows senses no disk is inserted check your autoplay settings but again autoplay would want to open the disk in something to play/ read the contents of which none exist :/

Well, when I insert a blank disk, I would like it to pop up an auto play window asking me what I want to do.
I have my autoplay settings set to 'Ask for action'when a disk is inserted. I may just go with a 3rd party all in one burner progrsm, iso/data/audio (CD)/video (DVD), instead of reinstalling win 7.

Well once again if you're wanting to burn something you would need to do it in a program.
By selecting the files/ folders... and click on burn whether it's music..... :/
After selecting burn you'll be prompted for the type of burn Data/ DVD and to insert a disk.

I have a idea.

When Windows 7 ask you to format the DVD and you do format the DVD will things work properly and burn your what ever you are trying to burn.

What are you trying to burn to a CD/DVD?

Am I on the same page or am I lost.

I'm not all that up to date with burning stuff but I do know formatting a disk before selecting what type of burn will end up with a disk that is not empty anymore because windows just formatted it
Then you'll get the famous insert blank disk popup when you do finally chose the burn type

I personally do all burning in Linux with kb3 because it works but is not physic I do have to open it and select the files first

I also am not a expert. In a years time I might burn 5 DVD. Just free programs i down load off the net. All I do is insert the disc and format it to NTSF or Fat32 and burn away.

I have never burned music or movies. I buy that kind of stuff.

Now, I get an error that windows 7 (SP1) can't read the disk (Second Picture):

I want to go back to having the autoplay popup when i insert a blank disk. I have also looked in the autoplay settings. All are set to 'Ask Me'.
