Windows 7 not reading blank cd/dvd, but other programs will....

For my two cents worth again I don't ever remember formatting a disk to burn anything ISO's, music,rescue disks, even stuff like Ubuntu boot disk etc etc

Update: As my Autoplay wasn't working. either, I found this link: http://www.sevenforums.com/general-discussion/233121-autoplay-not-working-windows-7-64-bit.html. After following the steps listed and restarting, my Drive shows up as a DVD drive, and when I put a blank disk in, windows asks me if I want to format it. HOWEVER, if I select the option to use in a CD/DVD player instead of multisession, it tells me it cannot read the disk, as shown in error.gif. But, if I format it as a multisession, it works fine. One step closer to a solution.

Might it be another problem in services.msc?

James depending on what you are burning mate I would be very careful what program you use I am not aware of that program I have used ImgBurn though it is safe The Official ImgBurn Website it is a little difficult to understand at first but once you get use to it it is good - and there plenty of real time user members here who can put you on the right track if you get lost.

I still cannot understand why you are getting that message??

I appreciate you response. I actually read aboutBurnaware on these forums. I did dl ImgBurn, and will prob use it for iso files, tho I don't use them a lot. Mostly I use dvds for data backup and home movies. Typically i will create the video_ts file, and then use clonedvd tho burn it. As I mentioned, 3rd party programs will burn to my dvd, but now, windows will only read it if I format it as a multi session. Still, it is progress.

Ok mate I think the ImgBurn does more than ISO's though yes that is what I do a bit with them as when I go to burn it comes up as an option. One needs to be quite into that program to use it for anything else though.

I just happened to be lucky enough to download the free ISO's of Windows 7 Home and Pro when they were freely available and I just used the Windows feature to burn myself a few copies of it. They need a genuine activation code mind you but so useful. It was a cynical exercise on Microsoft's part to disallow that option from the Heidoc.com site you will see in the tutorial http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/219487-clean-reinstall-factory-oem-windows-7-a.html but it like everything since has been a nonsense like embedding the activation code in the BIOS and not having a sticker but there are ways around it

Try disabling Auto Play in windows or CD-DVD drive properties. There should be no format on a blank disc therefore Windows should have no need to try reading it.
