All,

I found the discussion below and this is the exact problem I am having.

http://www.sevenforums.com/general-...ifications-aren-t-show-notification-area.html

I have tried all the normal Action Center stuff like enabling and disabling notifications, etc. Also have done the Group Policy thing. I am basically on a new install of Windows 7 so it hasn't been thrashed yet.

So to summarize, I am not getting any notifications for programs that are accessible from the SysTray. The behavior is that when any of the programs wants to show a notification, the TaskBar (which is set to Auto HIde) acts like the notifcation is there and stays up (won't Auto Hide) until I left or right click the icon that is trying to display the notification. So the Taskbar *thinks* there is a notification there but it is not displayed. This is driving me nuts. The only solution I have which is not really a solution is to select "Hide icons and notifications" for the app which removes it from the SysTray. FWIW, I have a roughly identical system (same OS, etc) with the exact same version of the software installed and running and the Notifications show up and work perfectly.

As a related example, when I plug in an external device, a little notification should pop up saying something like "The device is installed and ready for use". I hear all the beeping and stuff but no little notification pops up.

I have tried unistalling the application, same behavior. I just don't know what else to do. So I thought maybe crowd sourcing an answer would help. Thanks in advance.

Paul

I imagine you have tried this. But I'll mention it any how.
Go to:
Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Notification Area Icons

you will see a clickable "restore default icon behaviors" click it and check the results.

Thanks for the response.

Yes I did try that. I think I have now narrowed it down to what happened. Very unpleasant. The notifications stopped showing up (and other odd things) right after I installed "Core Temp" and its associated gadget. The problem is I think I remember pulling the install exe from a site other than ALCPU website (can't remember).

Anyway, some weird Network64 program got installed and trashed all my restore points. I tried to research how to remove it but didn't find much on the web. I did find others that had the same issue but no resolution. MalwareBytes and Microsoft Security Essentials did not detect it. All restore points I created "after" Network64 installed itself worked great, but those before it all failed (i.e. I could not roll back to a clean registry).

Anyway, given that I do not know to what extent this Network64 thing has trashed my system, I rolled back to a Disk Image I created about a week ago. That seems to have cleared things up but I lost a weeks worth of work spent building the system. Oh well, live and learn.

Sounds as if you have figured it out. Hope your image wasn't really old, that would help. The main part of live and learn is learn.
