Solved Windows 7 OEM + New Motherboard Issue(help needed)

Hey guys,


So my computer is HP Pavilion p6-2220t and I plan to swap out my motherboard for a better CPU upgrade. Now I have a pretty big issue with making this move and that's whether or not when I make this switch will my OEM Windows 7 still be active on this new motherboard by ASUS(H61 chipset/same as current mobo) so after I make this switch can anyone let me know what will happen if I just replug everything in with the new mobo+cpu will Windows 7 boot up but as if it's in some bootlegged version? Could I call Microsoft to ask for a replacement key.


This is not just an upgrade my audio chip on the mobo seems to have fried & tends to have some very odd issues not caused by instability in anything else (I checked).

Any help is greatly appreciated !

If you are looking at replacing the motherboard and CPU then a decent PSU could be in order. Then essentially you're looking at building a new PC. Good cases don't cost a lot and would run strips around the HP. You'd need to buy an OEM or retail OS. You could just keep the HP as a second/backup PC. It is all $ I know.

Newegg has Seven Pro on sale right now. An OEM license is good for ONE computer. Changing the CPU and Motherboard creates a different PC from that assigned to the license. (Unless the change is to the same type and model of the original.)

Could I possibly use the same HDD as I do not have the extra money to put into one at this moment? I mean I could try to buy another WIN7 off newegg then but I just want to make sure because after this point of replacing the motherboard and cpu my computer is already moved cases new psu +graphics card and such. Which would mean like you said I already would be considered as making a new computer setup now.

So if I just plug in my HDD to the mobo then try to turn it on will it boot into win7 and from then on I could just buy a key or do I do something weird and uninstall win7 from the HDD or something.

Kari's tutorial will/might get you started but you'll still need a new key. If you show up on the forum with other problems and key is still a HP OEM key or a hacked key, you'll probably get banned. It's an illegal installation.

You can use the same HDD with the new mobo which in rare cases will start on its own, or by either using Kari's method to SysPrep to move HD to another computer or by booting Paragon Adaptive Restore CD to P2P adjust Win7 to the new hardware.

You can also try to reactivate with the OEM COA Product Key, even call the Activation phone option which sometimes will yield unexpected results. But most likely you'll need to insert a new Product Key for your version within the next 30 days at Computer>Properties.
