Windows 7 Official Beta

***Hot off the press***

A photo of the courier delivering the initial bug reports back to Microsoft HQ.

Very good - but not true! Not even half of those reports has anything to do with bugs, it is all notes with praise!

Anyone reading a TEchnet subscription holder?
I am puzzled by this comment "Furthermore, in December 2008, Microsoft offered Windows 7 Beta via MSDN and TechNet to subscribers."
I am a Technet+ subscriber and MSDN, but I have not seen anything relating to Windows 7. I have just had another peep at the downloads and still nix. Is there an "inner sanctuary" there, to which I do not have access. Every other MS product is on the list for downloads? Do we all see the same list or are there several?

hey, just a question for you x64 users...what software do you use to mount an iso? I can't seem to find a 64 bit Alcohol 120%, etc. I uninstalled my 64 bit 6801 and went with 32 bit for this reason (well, that and I didn't have a 64 bit Photoshop and Illustrator)...

Windows 7 will do it for you - no need for a third party program. Just double click an ISO
Otherwise, as a third party choice, I use Magiciso - very painless!

I think we all get different - With Vista SP2 I grabbed from technet via my US IP hours before it showed up in the UK technet download section.

Just as a test I changed the location in the techet url from en-gb to zh-tw with the following result.

What flavour RAM?

DDR2 or DDR3? Why not go for the 12GB DDR3 the Asus Rampage II can take it!

(that's not my spec by the way, it's z3r010's the Rig King in the post above)

Why have it if your never going to use it?

Seven makes much better use of Ram as far as I can tell. In Vista there were a couple things I do that filled up the Ram and then I had problems. In Seven I haven't yet been able to push it past 50%. I know that one of my programs will probably do that, but I doubt it will ever push past 5 or 6 GB.

IMO, if you use it, by all means get it, but having just for the sake of having it is a waste of money that might be better spent elsewhere.

Looks pretty much the same to me?? Mine:
I was actually referring to the Windows 7 OS, not Vista. "With Vista SP2 I grabbed from technet via my US IP hours...etc" How does that work? If a new beta is on the way, I usually get an Email advice., but it is still in the downloads section.

The terms 32-bit and 64-bit refer to the way a computer's processor (also called a CPU), handles information.

The 64-bit versions of Windows can utilize more memory than 32-bit versions of Windows. This helps minimize the time spent swapping processes in and out of memory by storing more of those processes in Random access memory (RAM) rather than on the hard disk. This, in turn, can increase overall program performance. For more details, go to A description of the differences between 32-bit versions of Windows Vista and 64-bit versions of Windows Vista online.

Server 2008 the LAST 32bit Server OS for MS

Hi XxKOLOHExX

This article provides some answers on why the shift to 64bit computing

"Windows 7, Vista's successor, will be released in both 32-bit and 64-bit versions, but in the server operating system arena, Microsoft has indicated that the current Server 2008 product will be the last 32-bit server operating system. One can reasonably expect the emphasis to shift heavily to 64-bit computing over the next year.

We've all been using various 32-bit versions of Windows for years now, but clearly the future belongs to 64-bit computing. What do you need to know before you get a jump on destiny? Here are some answers. "

Howdy Norm!

This just caught my eye ... it explains alot of the complaints about 64-bit not being faster.

In fact, if you run the 64-bit version of Windows with only 4 GB of system memory, you may find that the computer runs a tad slower than with a 32-bit operating system due to the way computer instructions are stored in memory in 64-bit systems -- essentially, they take up more space. So you should have more than 4 GB of memory when running a 64-bit version of Windows. If you do, you should see a slight real- world performance improvement when running a 64-bit application.

OOo so 64-bit is faster only if you ave more than 4 gb ram. but if u have less then tick with 32 bit for now right? i guess i got to save up and build a computer because well its cheaper and i can get the best hardware to make 64bit the best

Hello Norm.

Yes it is a good article, thank you. I just thought to point that out to people considering 64-bit, especially as cheap as RAM is now; 8GB of "fast" DDR2 can be had for less than $100.00 US. (with free shipping)
