Windows 7 partition clone

Hi,

i found a few threads already on this forum, but none seems to solve my issue.
I got a ssd hdd, which i wanted to migrate my system to, but i can;t get it to work. I used norton ghost and clonezilla for cloning my system partition, but when i try to boot from my new drive i get message to repair the installation. Problem is, when i boot from the win 7 dvd it won't find the installation on my drive. Any ideas, or tips how to migrate the whole system partition onto the new drive?

The MBR has failed to copy or the drive letter has slipped.

Determine what assigned drive letter is now by booting DVD Repair console, click through to Recovery Tools list to open a Command line, type:

DISKPART
LIST DISK
SELECT DISK 0 (confirm this is WIn7 HD # from list)
LIST PARTITION
SELECT PARTITION 1 (confirm this is WIn7 part # from list)
DETAIL PARTITION

Is the drive letter listed correctly?

Is it System partition and marked Active? If not, do you have the 100mb System Reserved partition in the partition list. Detail it and confirm it is System and marked Active and note any drive letter.

If there is no 100mb SysReserved partition and Win7 partition has correct drive letter and is not marked Active, type ACTIVE next, then EXIT and return to Recovery Tools list to run Startup Repair up to 3 separate times with reboots to write the MBR to Win7.

If Startup Repair will not work because an installation is not showing to repair, try to force it's discovery by manually running these commands which are automated in Startup Repair:

bootrec.exe /fixmbr
bootrec.exe /fixboot
bootsect /nt60 C:/ (if System partition is C)

If necessary then run Startup Repair up to 3 separate times with reboots as it runs multiple tests and attempts to repair before rewriting the MBR.

Report back.

If you used the Norton Ghost imaging, I don't think it will work. You have to use the COPY function and copy the MBR (needs to be specified) and restore the MBR. At least that was the way it worked last time I used Ghost 14 last year.

Hi Guys,

thanks for your input! I managed to get it to run with a Ubuntu Live cd, and GParted What Norton Ghost and clonzilla coldnt achive GParted's done without any problems whatsoever, i mean, i had to run the repair tool from the Win 7 CD, but it worked as well

Wasn't aware you had Ubuntu on there, as repairs outlined were for Windows.

Glad you got it fixed. What was the Gparted solution?

Hi,

i've formatted the drive again, created 2 partitions, copy/pasted system and system reserved partition in Gparted to those 2 partitions, run windows startup repair twice. That solved my problem.
