Is anyone else's Windows 7 partitioned like this:

I just think it's weird that it would set up two partitions for an install.

Hello Firestrider.

That's the partition Windows 7 creates for the boot files. The way to avoid it is to install to a pre-existing partition.

Yes that is normal in Windows 7, it sets up a 200mb partition for the boot files. It only does that if you only have one OS on the computer, if you had Vista and you were dual booting you wouldn't get the 200mb partition.

You beat me Ted.

Thanks for the responses. Did Vista partition like that too on a new volume? Also is there a way to use the new file system WinFS?

Hello again.

It has to be the ONLY new volume, if you have any other MS OS installed it won't show up; no Vista doesn't do it.

Yes, I have the same 200MB partition.

During the install you are told that Windows want to create additional partitions. This partition is the home of WinRE (Windows Recovery Eviroment).
You are prompted during install, so if you choose you can cancel the creation of this partition. If canceled, WinRE will be installed on the same partition as Windows.

I guess, this way you can run a diagnostic/repair tool no matter what happens to the partition where windows is installed.

At least this is what I have gathered so far.

Off topic, but is WinFS included in the 7000 build of Windows 7?

I suspect its loading all that 200megs of data into ram upon boot. Can anyone confirm that?

If that is true too, that would leave a system with, for example, 2 gigabytes of ram just less than 2 gigabytes of total ram.
