Solved Windows 7 pdf problem

I recently upgraded from Vista to Windows 7 by doing a total reinstallation. Everything went okay except that after I transferred all of my files (which I had put on back up discs), none of the pdf files are readable. All seem to be encoded and I can't decode them. The files don't seem to be corrupt because I can successfully load them and read them on another computer (which is running on XP). Also, I can open the pdf files using the Adobe recovery software, but that doesn't enable me to transfer then to My Documents. All of my Word and Excel documents transferred fine. Any suggestions? I'm not quite sure what you mean by Adobe's recovery software and it's probably a silly question, but can you read them in Adobe Reader?

Yes, I can read them in Adobe.

Try saving one as a copy and renaming it, and then see if you can transfer it.

Nope, that doesn't do it.

I just found the solution - If I right click on the document in question and then, in the drop down menu click on "open with" and choose Adobe Reader it works. If, in the same submenu I click on default settings I get an option to "always use this program to open this kind of document" and when I choose that, every pdf in my transferred docs is recognized and opens automatically. Simple setting. Thanks for your help.

This was apparently a filetype association problem - for those that study this thread later.
