Windows 7 Pre Order is live

He can go from 32 XP to 64 W7, because a clean install must take place during the upgrade process. The MS rep told me this on the phone, and he double checked to make sure it was correct
Double Thanks Thanks.

Now, I'm trying to figure out if I should get the pro or not.
The only reason I might get the pro .. Is the ability to get a fee XP to run within W7 Pro.

I'm trying to figure out if this XP is a full version .. (or is it handicapped like Vista or W7) ..
and will it run in a 64 bit mode in a 64 bit W7 .. so I can use all my RAM ..
And since it's running in a Virtual machine .. would it run as fast as XP standing alone .

Yeah, I was assuming by saying upgrade he meant using the upgrade disk, and not necessarily an in-place-upgrade. Because "upgrading" XP requires a clean install, when using the upgrade disk. So the 32bit vs 64bit is only restricted if you are doing an in-place-upgrade, which you can do with vista. But even with vista I would recommend a clean install anyway
Thanks for clearing that up for us Grouchpunk08, I am assuming that my upgrade download that I pre ordered will work on my 32 bit xp and my vista 64. So I am right in assuming I will receive two different keys? Will l be able to install both from the same download? lm

By the way there are other restrictions, people really should check out the "windows 7 upgrade test matrix.doc". Here it is in pdf form for those who need it.

You will get one key that works for 32 bit and 64 bit but you can only activate one.

I'm not sure about the receiving two keys part, but since your Vista is 64bit and your XP is 32bit, you will be fine using Win7 64bit to upgrade either one of them. If you were to obtain 2 keys, yeah you could upgrade them both. But as I said, I think its just one key per purchase.

Edit- ok, as yupyup said, its one activatable key per purchase.

Are there any US retailers that you can walk in and preorder from (and get the discount of course)? It'd be nice to just be able to walk in on October 22nd and pick it up rather than wait for Amazon, etc to ship it/receive it...

Well I know you can pre-order it from the best buy website, I would assume you could do the same at actual store, it wouldn't hurt to go to your local best buy and ask them, or even give them a call

Where did you find a OFFicial MS disk with both x86 and x64. I was sent two different DISK, and yes 1 key for both versions. I could also activate both versions,. COULD use either version as dual boot, but not both at the same time.

The Home premium Vista disk that came with my laptop from gateway contained 32bit and 64bit on the same disk. Not sure about retail disks tho

I believe the Retail Vista editions only came with one dvd - except Ultimate which had both.

Recently some oem's have been sending both bit versions - I suppose to encourage people to move to 64 bit.

Possibly. But 7 will come with 2 disks bundled with HP and PRO, while I assume ultimate will contain both like vista ultimate did, its in the preorder FAQ.

Will I get 32-bit or 64-bit discs?

You’ll get both. Windows 7 Home Premium and Professional packaged products include both 32- and 64-bit discs.

Hi,

The price increase for the boxed dvd's is entirely consistent.

If you have a Retail version of Vista, MS will send you a replacement dvd ( or the different bit version ) for $10 ( inc. shipping) - might have gone up to $12 or so recently.

It seems the fact they are now charging around $20 for the 7 dvd ( inc . shipping) can be explained by the inclusion or two dvd's.

OK, I've seen this question asked so many times in the first 4 pages that I'm not even gonna read any more, but answer it now.

UPGRADE VERSION IS A FULL VERSION!!

The only qualifier is that in order to do an Install with an Upgrade disk, you have to insert the install disk from an earlier OS's retail CD-DVD OR enter the key from a legitimate previous OS when the process requests it!

There is no such thing as a "Partial" OS...aka Upgrade, they're all the full OS, only the upgrade version can be installed only if you Own a previous version and/or have a valid key for it.

other wise you get 30 days, plus the -rearms.
