With the release of Ubuntu 9.04 and developments like Moblin and HP's MIE creating quite stir, plenty of people were saying that 2009 would be 'the year of Linux on the desktop.' Not that the statement hasn't been made before, but there appeared to be some real momentum this time around.

Enter the Windows 7 RC. A quick look at StatCounter's most recent data shows Linux use at .71% and Microsoft's soon-to-be released OS right behind at .68%. StatCounter's chart only shows the top 5 OSes, so you'll need to take a look at the raw CSV data to get the numbers.

Things certainly look good for Windows 7, but let's keep in mind that it's still competitive with Linux on price at this point (read: free). Once people have to shell out their hard-earned money for the new OS, will things change or will Linux still struggle to make gains on Windows?

What are your thoughts?

What is your opinion of Win 7 and how do you think the public will receive it upon its final release?

I personally think it will be much better received than Vista. If it will quickly take over Win XP users, that im not sure of. Im sure it will take at least half of Win XP users, at least from what i can judge from the betas and RC so far.

I dont know if it will enter the work place soon but Id like to think so. Most work places run XP. Hopefully Win 7 will enter the work place soon.

I dont think Win 7 is all that innovative or ground breaking but I think it is a great OS so far. No complains really. But then again, I dont know anything else than Windows. Ive never tried a Mac OS or Linux or anything else for that matter. Ive heard good things about Mac OS's but most of the public use Windows.

well i can't deny i like it!! it does have the vista feel but it's more solid. vista got a real dissing so the masses got a bad vibe about it. however, there's real positive speculation for win 7 so hopefully it will win over the xp faithful.

I think MS not only got this right (with one exception), but may well have hit it out of the park. I've tried just about every OS there is. I have also been a rabid MS basher (excluding their Office apps), so I don't say this stuff lightly.

7 has really impressed me so far. Businesses will not jump fast. Their IT departments will and must run a candidate replacement OS through the ringer before they recommend committing to it. That will be on the order of two years, if all goes well. The keys will not be eye candy, they will be stability, security, configurability, and maintainability.

EDIT: I almost forgot. The one "exception" so far is DRM. It is even more pervasive and maddening in 7 than it was in earlier incarnations. DRM is a whole separate, lengthy, and contentious topic. You can probably tell where I stand.

Not sure at this point, however, with as good as Win 7 is in RC the final can only be better. And, boy with that much of a jump in linux use MS have just better be watching their back. . .:sarc:

well M$ can hardly be blamed for that, they've got their hands tied by the RIAA. Think we can forgive them this one 'exception'.

Win 7 i must admit is good.

It just pisses me off that it is exactly what they promised Vista would be.
I, and i'm sure many others, feel royally s***wed having to fork out $$$$ to get Vista SP3.

So i don't. For now Vista SP2 and as soon as a reliable 'free' copy comes online i'll take that without reservations.

Paid MS tax since the 80's they owe me.

Linux is simply not ready for the desktop. Plus all my games wouldnt work for it (and no I dont care about using virtualisation software, I shouldnt have to).

It is ok to screwed. LMAO at Vista SP3, I know how u feel yes we should get 7 as a free upgrade but it is not to be. 7 isn't exactly wot Vista was sposed to be tho, we never got Windows Future Storage (WinFS). We was even promised it later as and add-on but it seems the project got shelved after it was supposedly completed.

N.B. Just a friendly warning, the mods don't tolerate any talk of piracy, hacking, reverse engineeering and such, u'll get urself banned.

From the problems there are with just NTFS we should feel lucky WFS was shelved. It was way beyond the scope of a generalist OS producer.

Hi all
Basically comparing Linux with Windows is a bit of a pointless task.
Linux wasn't (and still isn't) intended to be a "Turnkey" desktop system unlike Windows -- just switch on and run your applications.

Of course if you have some expertise you CAN use Linux very successfully as a workstation OS and nearly all the software is free so for those interested enough it can be a fruitful endeavour.

Now of course when it comes to SERVER type software -- well this is where Linux really does come into its own -- but you usually don't want to run a server system as an OS desktop (although it can be done -- a lot of people I know run Windows 2003 server as a desktop OS but it takes a bit of fiddling to get it to behave satisfactorily as a desktop OS).

Talking about the Death of Linux is premature -- Linux and Windows are best suited to totally different tasks -- networking is as everybody can see STILL a real dog with Windows whilst the stability of W7 and the ease of installation make this a really suitable desktop OS - especially for home users or those with limited computer knowlege.

Cheers
jimbo

I agree, I use Linux, I like the multiple desktops when I'm surfing the net, but that's the thing, I only can really use it to Surf, check email, music, and watch some videos. Gaming, vid and pic editing, just about everything else is useless on Linux right now.
