Windows 7 (pre-SP1) will not update

I upgraded a 32-bit XP installation to Vista and then to Windows 7. I made the grievous error of upgrading with a pre-SP1 version, thinking I could run the standalone SP1. Instead, Windows Update refuses to run, returning an error of 0x800F0900, and running KB947821 consistently complains that certain corrupt packages related to the Windows installer cannot be repaired.

I am unable to update Windows Update with any newer version.

Is there anything I can do? (Attached please find the SUR log.)

Try this method:

Cannot Run Windows Update on a Windows 7 PC?

It worked for me.

The only thing I did differently than what is in the above article is that I renamed the SoftwareDistribution folder to something else rather than deleting the contents of it.

I use Samba to share my data drive with the other computers at my house and with my guest session in VMWare Workstation Player.
I made the mistake of installing the Intel driver update utility and now Windows 7 will not boot at all.

Hi Maxter,

The normal fix for this is to download the related KB and extract the missing/corrupt components and slipstream them in.

Unfortunately MS in thier wisdom decided NOT to issue the .256 WindowsUpdate Agent standalone KB required , (the one you need)

As its also quite old im not sure that even the Sysnative forum will have it, your best hope.
Post your logs there, if they havnt got it then it will have to be a clean install.
Dont believe a repair install will fix it either, you could give it a try.

Thanks, all, but in the end I just started over from a backup and upgraded with an SP1 ISO.

Now I can't get it to upgrade to 10, but that's a story for another forum.
