Windows 7 pricing announced - cheaper than Vista‏

European Pricing unveiled

Hi All

From what I can see the European pricing model doesn't look too bad -- although the No Browser part still needs to be clarified== you do need SOME browser in the system to be able to connect to the Internet and download and install one.

BBC NEWS | Technology | Windows 7 pricing gets unveiled

Ty Sir, just what i was looking for.... tho makes me wonder if it is really worth goin any higher than Home premium to be honest... can anyone see anything really worth opting for in the Pro version?

I guess the XP compatibility... but for your casual user... well is it liekly to be that in need?

Well, unless they throw in some serious "bells and whistles" it will be Home Premium for most "home" users. No surprise there.

Home versus Pro verus Ultimate for the serious "user"? Even for a small office Pro/Ultimate offers what critical functionality...? Image Backup? Acronis True Image is only ~$20-25.

I've never done upgrades before. how does it work?

1. I've got a 32bit Vista CD key and discs. If I purchase the 49.99 window 7 home premium 64 bit upgrade, does it work from this? And if it does, is it the same as freshly installing windows 7 if I had the 200$ full CD's?

2. Would the 49.99$ windows 7 upgrade work from the RC? and if it does, is it the same as a fresh install as the 200$ full discs?

3. Regardless of what platform works to upgrade etc (ignoring my questsions 1 and 2 for a sec), overall, what are the differences from upgrading or a fresh install with W7 install discs?

That's really great considering it's much cheaper than Vista. If anyone could afford Vista at that time, they should be able to afford 7 now too. The prices are reasonable to me considering they are a software company and earn their revenue from selling software. I think I'm going to go for the Home Premium Upgrade.

Though some will be affected by the Recession, they can just use the RC until next year when the recession will likely be over, then buy their copies. And I think the EU Versions are great. It's like your getting a upgrade version of Windows without having to need to upgrade.

How do you mean European pricing doesn't look too bad?

According to the links, Upgrade price to 7 Pro is available in US for $99.

In the UK, it is 190.00 GBP = $312.344

It's a disgrace.

That has to be a misprint.

Home Premium Upgrade is 80.00 GBP = $ 131.526

It can't be 2.5 times as much for Pro.

It's not a misprint, you're confusing preorder prices with retail prices. I'll take info straight from my article:

Preorder for US: Home Premium upgrade ($49.99) and Professional upgrade ($99.99)
Preorder for UK: Home Premium upgrade (£49.99) and Professional upgrade (£99.99)

Retail prices for US: Home Premium upgrade ($119.99), Professional upgrade ($199.99), Ultimate upgrade ($219.99)
Retail prices for UK: Home Premium upgrade (£79.99), Professional upgrade (£189.99), Ultimate upgrade (£199.99)

...although the No Browser part still needs to be clarified== you do need SOME browser in the system to be able to connect to the Internet and download and install one....

Not necessarily.

They'd expectedly have IE available via Windows Update at the worst.

In many cases the no browser thing will mean OEM's simply put on what they want, or provide links to FTP connections or something comparable.

Also, if someone's savvy enough to not want IE from something like Windows Update, they'll be savvy enough to get something else on the computer.

In the worst case you'd grab IE from Windows Update, download something else, then remove IE.

Thanks Slimy,

Oops, I read that wrong. I took it from the BBC article.

(I was distracted by something else - dealing with it now.)

It is still 1.5 times the US pricing:mad:.

Clear as mud.. as usual MS has made a pig's ear..

of its announcements.. a few questions..

What does the 'upgrade' version 'upgrade' and is it transferable to a new computer?

Is the 'full' version transferable?

What is the pricing for OEM copies?

Why do MS consistently rip-off European and UK customers?

We aren't American, we understand exchange rates and don't believe that if you leave the shores of the U.S. of A you fall off the end of the world.

this nonsense about there being a 'limited number' of pre-order copies?

Are they seriously saying that some customers will get their orders rejected with a note saying, "pay us double and you can have one" - I don't think so, not even MS are that dumb - oh hang on ;-)
