Hello
I have been having a lot of blue screen issues with my desktop over the past couple of days and it's to the point where I want to do a format.
I'm somewhat familiar with doing a format as I had done it a couple of times with my older desktop running XP.

My first issue with attempting to do the format on my current desktop is that I don't have the Windows 7 Professional OS Disc.
For whatever reason, the business where I bought the computer didn't include the disc.
It's a legitimate business where I bought the computer and I do have the product key for the OS.
They told me I could go online and burn the OS to a disc(s) myself.

I didn't do that but what I'm thinking of doing is do the Create a System Image thing.
My question about using that method is:
If my computer has a virus, will that virus be included with the system image?

If it isn't , then I'll have a couple of more follow up questions if anyone is interested in giving advice.

Hi View,
Creating an image of a problem OS is pointless, you'll be where you are now! blue screening!! and yes if you are infected that will be carried over as well.

Now for some better news
run this tool, copy/paste the results
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=52012

It should show your system with either a System builder or Retail licence type
Note the business SHOULD have provided you with the discs

If it comes back as legit i can provide a link for W7 SP1 download.

Hello Roy
Call me paranoid but before I share that information, is there anything in that information that someone can use that I don't want them to?

Nothing in that report thats sensitive.
Its a standard MS tool with the results posted thousands of times to various troubleshooting forums.

I think I may have found the link to the W7 SP1.
Is this it?
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/15090/windows-7-install-service-pack-1-sp1

If you are you questioning the legitimacy of the OS I was sold, I'm pretty sure it's good. The business I deal with has been in business for the past 15 years and apparently it wasn't uncommon for the Window 7 OS disc's not being included with the computer purchase.
Not just at this business but from other business's as well.
I don't agree with that but apparently that's what happened.

He breaking the terms of the EULA then, and your system could be classified as non-genuine.
This is done to STOP multiple usage of the same product key.
(MS count the number of times a key is used, and once the limit is reached they are ALL blocked)

So when you download the ISO and HAVE to input the product key during the install its possible that it will be rejected.

Still no reason not to post the results

note as its validated using the SLP channel (guess the rest)

OK, now I understand.
But, I do have another question before I post the results and just to make sure we are on the same page.
Why are you wanting to give me a link to W7 SP1 when I already have that installed?

I said i would post the link once i was happy it was legit, AND that the PARTIAL product key would have been accepted on install.
Having W7 installed does NOT mean its genuine, and i have to abide by forum rules in regard to piracy issues.

I suggest you go back to the shop and demand a refund.
You have an Asus OEM product key on a retailed motherboard = counterfiet installation.
The product key has been "lifted" from the COA sticker on a genuine W7 computer.
Unfortunately until you purchase either a Sytem Builder or Retail key we cannot help you further .
(your link was only for SP1 not the complete system)

Wow, that's good to know.
I found it odd when I asked for the W7 disc, they told me I could burn a copy of it online.
I definitely will be paying this business a visit this week.
The computer is still under warranty so, they better come good for something.

Can you explain what a System Builder is?

Hi View,
Basically MS issues 3 types of PUBLIC licence

OEM -- used by all the large >> Factory built<< computer companies such as Dell
(these comps are all initally shipped with a base product key)
and a unique secondary Back-up key found on the COA sticker attached -- the "lifted" key i referred to

OEM System Builder -- usually sold and supplied with the OS discs by specialist (usually high end gaming comps) makers, they can however sell the package to the public.
The product key for these is found on the packaging which must be supplied with the discs

Retail -- Sold to the public direct includes discs and the key is on the packaging
THIS KEY IS THE ONLY ONE THAT CAN BE MOVED ON TO DIFFERENT COMPUTERS
(via the NSLP channel).

Sorry ViewSonic it appears you have been scammed.

A legal Windows 7 is getting hard to come by. So you might want to put a little rush on your purchase.

Hello Roy
I thought I understood your above reply but now I'm a bit confused.
My confusion is about the Asus OEM product key statement.

At first I thought what was lifted was the Windows 7 product key but are you saying what was lifted was a product key from an genuine Asus motherboard?
If that is the case, I was unaware that motherboards have product keys.

My computer build specs indicate that I have a Asus Z97-P Desktop Motherboard.
Are you saying that I don't actually have a genuine Asus Motherboard but a generic Motherboard showing Asus specs due to the lifted product key?

Does the COA acronym stand for certificate of authenticity in this case?

Hello Jack
As all this information regarding Windows License types is new to me.
Let me try again to see if I'm understanding correctly what you and Roy are trying to explain.

A base W7 product key is assigned to all prebuilt/mass produced computers.
Each individual computer also has a specific product key assigned to it.

Once the specific product key has been activated on a particular computer, that product key information is tied to both the software and hardware of that particular computer.

In my case, because my computer is a custom build and not something mass produced, none of the above would apply, so the builder would've had to get a product key from somewhere else.

Am I on the right track?

Yes.

And the builder should have either given you a COA or attached it to the PC, what he did is illegal. He has to provide a COA and he should also provide you with a genuine W7 install dvd.

And in regard to your question in reply #19, motherboards do not have keys, not Windows 7 motherboards anyway.

Windows 8, or 8.1 or W10 the key is stored in the bios, that is with a store brought PC from Dell, HP etc

A custom PC will not.

And yes you have a genuine Asus motherboard.

He may have gotten the key off another Asus computer he had and used it on yours.

And Torch was not going to give you a link to download Service Pack 1, you found that link yourself, he was going to post the link to download the Windows 7 Service Pack 1 Iso file, that`s the complete file needed to create a Windows 7 install dvd.

After you get your key issue straightened out and if the shop will not give you a genuine install disc, we will gladly post the direct link to download a Windows 7 Pro SP1 64 Bit Iso file so you can create an install dvd.
